Let me be the first to tell you that it is not easy. None of this is easy. Just getting here took years. Two and a half years to be exact. Sure, I have auditioned for Broadway shows before but those were just open calls- anyone can go to those. To be asked to come in for an audition for a specific role – that’s a whole different ball game and one I was not expecting to be in.
Now to clue you in on how this all came about, no, the casting company did not find my headshot on the street or stumble upon my website magically. I went in to audition for a different show the week prior and four days later as I was sitting on my couch with severe tonsillitis and an email popped up from the casting company of that audition asking me to come in and audition for one of Broadway’s biggest shows. HELLO, WHAT?! Yes, the answer to that will always be yes. Thankfully I had a week to prepare and boy was it needed. The casting company sent along two songs that needed to be learned from start to finish–I’m talking 15 pages of music…complicated music. So off to Spotify I go to find the songs–I don’t regularly listen to show tunes in my spare time so I had to learn these songs from scratch. A few days and a few voice lessons later, I was feeling pretty confident about this audition.
The day of the audition came and I took the train to NYC like I always do. A friend hooked me up with a practice room before my audition which was just what I needed to warm up and feel comfortable about walking into the audition room that morning. Fast forward a few hours and I'm signing in for the audition.
Now here's the part y'all may be surprised to hear. They asked us to prepare two songs. How many songs do you think I sang? How long do you think I was in the room? Well, I spent hours and hours learning the music only to sing one song and be in the room for 90 seconds. And you know what? It was all worth it. Yes, we as actors spend a lot of time preparing for these auditions only to be seen for a very small amount of time but in the end, it is all worth it.
And at the end of the day you may get a callback or cast in the show but in the event that you don't, you still got called in to audition for a Broadway show and how cool is that?
