Imagine this: you waltz (okay, more like drag yourself) into your local coffee shop one Monday morning. You’re trying to avoid eye contact with the human race—the backpack strewn college kids, the early bird palettes moms, the businessmen and women buttoned tightly into their formal ware—so you stare at the artwork on the walls instead. You’re jealous of the simplistic life they lead. They get to people-watch all day while you, on the other hand, have to deal with people. The week’s agenda winds itself around your neck like an itchy wool scarf, irritating your skin and sleep-deprived mind. You hate Mondays. Mondays are worse than, well, most anything.
When the barista finally hands you your latte, you look down to see “Kick Monday’s Ass” written on the foamy surface. Your cup of coffee just gave you a dose of motivation, and you’re probably feeling pretty great about it. That’s more than a normal caffeinated drink could do. And now your usual morning pick-me-up actually lifted your spirits. But how?
Steam CC recently created a product called the Ripple Maker that can put graphics of any kind—quotes, selfies, you name it—on top of coffee drinks. Instead of the leaf-like designs baristas carefully craft on the surface of lattes, they now can print any image, what Steam CC refers to as Ripples.
“Enrich the coffee experience with gorgeous graphics, inspiring statements, clever commentary, and personalized messages,” the company’s website reads.
Here’s how it works: A barista makes a coffee drink the way he or she usually makes it. Using the Coffee Ripple App, a customer sends in a desired image with dimensions of at least 3 x 3, or the barista can choose a custom image of his or her liking. Said barista then prints the graphic on the drink using the Ripple Maker, which comes with Ripple Pods, each capable of producing more than 1,000 Ripples. And that's it! Each Ripple is created with a small amount of coffee-based extract, so don't worry, it won't change the taste of your favorite drink.
Ripples can even top cold drinks as long as there's a layer of frothed milk on the surface.
See the video below for a demonstration.
The Ripple Maker is a great way for coffee shops to promote themselves and differentiate their beverages from the competition. Right now, Steam CC is only selling the machine to businesses and are not taking home orders (something I'd be all over if I won the lottery). Ripple Makers start at $999 with service plans beginning at $85 per month.

“We started our company so that a simple but powerful cup of coffee could send a different kind of message,” reads Steam CC's vision statement.
Steam CC has created a product that holds so much potential to infuse positivity into even the dreariest of days.
Remember your childhood birthday cakes that had your picture printed on the icing? Most importantly, remember how fun they were to eat? Now you can have just as much fun sipping on your face and look a lot more sophisticated doing it. The possibilities are endless. You can use "Ripples" for pregnancy announcements, proposals, even breakups. I mean, what better way to end a relationship than by handing your significant other a cup of coffee with a message, "Congrats, you're single!" and then booking it to the door (to avoid coffee-drenched clothes)? But you didn't hear that idea from me.
