" Summer Girls": It's my typical summer jam. Somehow, without fail, every summer it ends up on my summer playlist.
If you haven't heard click play or miss out on a great anthem for this season:
Anyway, these lyrics may blow you away or be a little silly, but these lines are why this song is the best for any summer night or beach day. Here are my thoughts as together we can understand the meaning behind this musical masterpiece:
"New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits, Chinese food makes me sick"
First, upon Googling NKOTB, they peaked during 1984-1994. Also known as the time before I was alive. Second, Chinese food only makes me sick if I eat buffet Chinese food.
"Billy Shakespeare wrote a bunch of whole sonnets, call me Willy Whistle cause I can't speak, baby"
Yes, we all know about Shakespeare. Willy Whistle was a super creepy clown on a TV show from the '80s who didn't speak.
"When I met you, I said my name is Rich, you look like a girl from Abercrombie & Fitch"
Rich, you like money right? Cause money talks? Also, is that a compliment? I hope so.
"Cherry Pez, Coke Crush, Rock Stud, Boogie"
Yes to the cherry Pez, Coke Crush like Coca Cola? Hmm. Definite yes to the boogie.
"Used to hate school so I had to play hooky"
Ooooh, a bad boy. Intrigued.
"You come from Georgia, where the peaches grow, they drink lemonade and speak real slow"
Like rapgenius.com says: there are only two things worth knowing about Georgia. Andre 3000 and peaches.
"You love hip hop and rock and roll"
Good job, I do too. You're learning.
"You love Fun Dip and Cherry Coke, I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke"
This girl really likes cherry-flavored things. The joke must have been funny then!
"Summertime girls are the kind I like"
As you should. Girls are happiest/ prettiest/ tannest in the summer. It needs to be appreciated sometimes.
"I'll steal your honey like I stole your bike"
Just lol at this line. Originally a Beastie Boys line in The New Style, but I thoroughly still enjoy it.
"I like the color purple, macaroni and cheese, ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees"
All very good things... Still intrigued.
"I'd call you up, but what's the use?"
The use is that we essentially have all the same things in common, calling me up would do some good.
"I like Kevin Bacon, but hate Footloose"
Flip this. Footloose rocks. Kevin Bacon... Ehh. It's a personal opinion.
"I think I'm over you, but I'm really not sure"
Oh, the classic line. One foot in, one foot out. He's wishy washy. Does he want this girl or nah? Does he only want her for the summer?
"I'd take her if I had one wish, but she's been gone since that summer, since that summer"
OHHHH it all makes sense. A summer love of sorts.
Well, regardless of the lyrics, and the fact that this song is definitely over a decade old, I still love it. Maybe it'll find its way onto your summer playlist just like it has for me.
