In today’s fast evolving electronica realm, sounds are certainly going in very interesting directions. New genres are emerging as well as fusing with one another. There is also a current trend where some of the most forward-sounding music is coming from a very retro space. Enter Atlanta-based electronica musician Ultraloner with his debut EP “Wandering Downs.”
Ultraloner brings a unique perspective to the electronic music space since he also “moonlights” as an indie rocker in the band The Six Sixes. Although grounded in rock as an artist, Ultraloner showcases an 80s-inspired electro theme on “Wandering Downs” through his robotic soundscapes that throwback to such legends as German techno pioneers Kraftwerk. This is especially evident on “Future Is Electronic” with its beaming upbeat energy and tight mechanical melodies. The EP’s “Joystick” track takes you back to the heyday of the video arcade era with digital sounds reminiscent of popular games of the period. Continuing in the same vein, “Psychotronic” is a fast-paced hyper ballad that could easily be an ode to the sci-fi thriller “Tron” series. Then there’s the militaristic techno funk of “Battle Tank” blaring its bombastic tribal-laced EDM beats.
Even though “Wandering Downs” is a trip down memory lane, it’s also the sound of now too. And if the ‘future is electronic’, as Ultraloner’s song title of the same name proclaims, then we’re certainly already there.
