A Thank You Letter To My Roommates

I'm going to miss you over the summer.

A Thank You Letter To My Roommates
Lauren Higgins

To my roommates,

As the school year winds down to an end, I look back upon the year and realize that I wouldn't have survived with you. Who would I tell my stories to, vent to 24/7, watch random videos online with, gossip with, and order dominoes with at 3 a.m. on the weekends?

Roommates are defined as the people who occupy the same room as you, but my roommates are much more than that. As much as we occupy each other's space in the same dorm room, we've also become close friends over the course of the year. It's crazy to think how not so long ago we were just faces passing by each other at orientation and finding each other's friend requests on our Facebook notifications.

Thank you for being there to let me into the building and our room when I would be locked out. I'm glad someone was always in the room to answer the group text when we'd lock ourselves out on occasion, even if that meant getting out of bed at 2 a.m. to open the door on a Sunday night.

Thank you for always worrying about me if I didn't come back to the room because I was trapped in the library for hours upon hours or if I wasn't back before you planned to go to bed.

Thank you for not getting upset when I would constantly ask almost everyday, "does the back of my hair look straight enough?" because I could never see what's going on back there and never could trust my own judgement.

Thank you for being my personal fashion assistants and allowing me to always rely on you for an opinion of what to wear and what not to wear on the weekends.

Thank you for taking care of me when I'm sick and supplying the ibuprofen, tylenol, but most importantly, the ginger ale for tummy aches.

Thank you for taking an unnecessary amount of photos in front of our tapestries with me.

Thank you for sharing dominoes almost every weekend with me. I can always count on you to answer, "yes" when I ask if anyone wants to order pizza.

Thank you for always listening to me and my crazy stories, even though sometimes I know I probably bore you with story after story, thank you for listening no matter what. My pillow talk just isn't cutting it and you're much more supportive than a pillow.

Thank you for telling me stories, I do enjoy listening to your adventures on weekends of how you ended up somewhere other than our room, how a professor gave a boring lecture, or how you got sick from food in the dining hall.

Thank you for making me smile and laugh with your jokes, sense of humor, and decisions of what to watch on Netflix. Watching the "Powerpuff Girls" at midnight is definitely more beneficial than studying for an exam.

Out of everything, the most important thank you I have is for sticking up for me, being loyal, and a great friend. Yes there are times we all may disagree or bicker on stupid things, but at the end of the day, I always look forward to coming back to the room and having you greet me from the couch. Whether it's 2 a.m. or 2 p.m., you're always there to say, "Hi!" and make my day instantly better. I can always count on you for a hug to cheer me up, to eat and share food with me, and to support my crazy decisions. We may not always agree on the same thing, but we can agree that us winding up in the same dorm room happened for a reason.

I am going to miss waking up to your alarm clocks going off before mine, getting ready on weekends together, and laughing until we cry. It's not goodbye, it's see you in a few weeks because there's no way I can last four months over the summer without seeing your faces.

Xoxo

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
