What They Don't Tell You About Sorority Recruitment at ASU

My name is Brynn, I am new to writing, and I definitely needed this article a year ago. I was new to America, coming home from living 6 years abroad, and moving away from home to ASU. As my mother was part of Greek life at the University of Oregon, it had been the plan to rush the semester I went to college. And so I did. This article series will be an in-depth exploration of ASU's specific recruitment style, schedule, and tips from my sorority members and I. If you are a planner, like me, and have stumbled upon this article because you want to rush, or are even thinking about it, I encourage you to wholeheartedly sign up at this link: https://arizonastate.mycampusdirector2.com/landing/

As a kid, I loved knowing things. For example, when I was 5 years old my mom took me in for a checkup at the doctor's office. I did not mind it at all until the dreaded line came: "You are getting shots today." My mother, as kind as she is, tried her best to make the process painless by not telling me until the very last second. This, as it turns out, was the most painful thing. I have been told this story since, and I can honestly say I wasn't mad about the needles, I was mad that she hadn't told me.

You see, I am a planner, a researcher, and an organizer. I love back to school shopping for organizational tools at Target and I love going to school and having a long to-do list that I so gracefully get to check off. These qualities made it so I needed to know everything I could about sorority recruitment months before anyone else thought about move-in day.

I wanted to know ASU recruitment inside out: what sororities there were, what were their values, what are their Instagram profiles like, is everyone rushing blonde, how long the process is, outfits to wear, hairstyles, shoes, everything. Down to the last detail, I thought I had it covered. When I moved into ASU, it was the start of an unbelievable journey that leads me to write this article series today, for you.

So, the basics:

ASU has a large number of sororities. We are a large school, thus each person participating in recruitment (official title: Potential New Member or PNM), can find their niche so to speak. During Panhellenic Recruitment, around 15 sororities recruit. These are:

Delta Gamma (ΔΓ), Alpha Chi Omega (ΑΧΩ), Kappa Delta (ΚΔ), Kappa Kappa Gamma (ΚΚΓ), Alpha Phi (ΑΦ), Pi Beta Phi (ΠΒΦ), Alpha Omicron Pi (ΑΟΠ), Alpha Delta Pi (ΑΔΠ), Alpha Gamma Delta (ΑΓΔ), Sigma Kappa (ΣΚ), Kappa Alpha Theta (ΚΑΘ), Delta Zeta (ΔΖ), Chi Omega (ΧΩ), Mu Epsilon Theta (ΜΕΘ), and Phi Sigma Rho (ΦΣΡ).

During this article series, I will be giving a number of tips. Tip #1: Familiarize yourself with the Greek letters! It will help you keep track of everything during recruitment.

Each of these sororities is home to strong, amazing, talented women who cannot wait to meet you during recruitment. As I went through the recruitment process, it was constantly repeated to "trust the process" and that "the house will know if you would fit with them" and "the women recruiting are just as nervous as you." I can say with 100% certainty that all of these statements are true.

Until next week,

Brynn

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
