Spring semester is upon us faithful college students and with it comes several confusing and truthful thoughts. With the new semester comes questions about whether or not we can make through the winter to see flowers bloom, how much procrastinating we can do, why the weather is so confusing and whether or not we can survive until next year. While we try to navigate through campus in our snow boots, thoughts begin to fill our minds about what will be doing in the four months to come. Here is a collective list of the very important and some unimportant questions we all have over this spring semester.
1. Why is it called Spring semester when it's snowing outside?
Names can be deceiving and this statement holds true for spring semester. About 50 percent or more of the five months we spend in college about shrouded in snow and cloudy days. This is especially true for students in the midwest (yay corn). The few days that the sun does gleam are followed by frigid winds and regrets of not attending school in Florida or California.
2. When can I start wearing shorts???
Because the weather is ever so confusing during spring semester, so are our fashion choices. This may call for some emergency shorts or pants carefully packed away in your backpack. Layers are always useful too. Just remember to check your weather app, just because it is January does not mean it is in the 30s and just because it is March does not mean it’s in the 60s.
3. For seniors, did I fulfill my graduation requirements?
"Senioritis" is real and anyone who tries to deny it is a liar. Spring semester senior year is pretty terrifying because it is your last four months before real adulthood and responsibilities. You have to make sure you’ve done everything right to ensure you get that diploma. That includes returning all library books, if people still check out library books, making sure you do not owe the school any overdue payments and handing in all the proper paperwork and applications. It would be terrible to not walk during graduation.
4. For Freshmen, is Freshman Forgiveness still a thing or…?
Freshman spring semester is also pretty terrifying because you realize you are in it for the long haul. Maybe Fall semester was eh, but you have taught yourself how to balance studying, social life, extracurriculars and sleeping - right? Probably wrong. You will most likely take too many classes or screw up in and then hopefully be lucky enough to go to a university where they have freshman forgiveness and you can drop a class up until the final exam and not have it show up on your transcript.
5. How fast can I lose the weight gained while at home?
Everyone gains weight during winter break. It is science. Everyone has New Year’s resolutions of losing said weight. But because shorts weather is approaching, everyone is scrambling to make a proper workout schedule and not gain the freshman 15, sophomore 15, junior 15 or senior 15. They are all things.
6. Can I save my GPA?
Fall semester may have been good or bad for you, but regardless you want to end the year on a good note. This means promising yourself you will have a 4.0 by the end of the semester and then settling for a 3.5.
7. What am I doing for spring break?
Everyone acts like they are going to go big and all out for spring break. It just makes sense - you have to follow movie protocol. Go big or go home and a good amount of us will be going home. But pretending to plan a week long vacation in Mexico is fun, until everyone bails on you and you are stuck going home.
8. Can I make it to next semester?
Once Spring break is over, classes start getting serious and it is not all fun and games anymore. As the snow starts melting and the sun starts shining, your sanity and coffee consumption increase. Thirsty Thursdays turn into Thesis Thursdays and weekends are spent at the library. You tell yourself you can make it through and that hopefully you will be
