It's strange to think that in a week, I will be waking up in a dorm that I will call my new home. Although my university is 20 minutes away from the house I grew up in, it is exciting to be moving away. I finally get to experience life on my own. Last year, I commuted as a freshman, and I was eager to experience campus life. An entire year has passed, and I can't believe I am a few days away from leaving the place I have been so familiar with my whole life. As move in day approaches, I know there are going to be a few things from my home life that I am definitely going to miss.
My bed
It is going to be extremely difficult to downgrade from my comfy queen-sized bed to a twin — excuse me, twin XL — bed. One can only hope that the overpriced mattress topper my aunt bought me will bring some comfort when I realize how small the bed actually is.
My dog
I am definitely going to miss coming home and being welcomed by my dog. It instantly brightens up my day. My dog Macey and I do everything together. We watch TV, eat dinner and we even sleep together. Most of the time she only hangs around me because I have food, but I am going to miss dressing her up in ridiculous outfits and taking hundreds of selfies together.
Home-cooked meals
Although I am excited to spend about four hours in the dining hall with friends eating endless food, I am going to miss my mom's cooking for sure. I am always looking forward to her meals, which are absolutely mouth watering. When I visit home, I am going to take a lot of leftovers back to school.
Not paying for laundry
Let's be real. Who wants to pay $3 or $4 for a load of laundry? Now I know $3 doesn't seem like a lot, but it will add up. Me, being a broke college student, that is really going to be breaking the bank for me. Maybe I won't do laundry for a couple weeks.
Closet space
The closet space that I am going to lose is scary. Where are all of my clothes going to go? Most importantly, where are all my shoes going to go? There isn't enough space on the closet floor to fit all of the shoes that I am about to bring. I am going to have to be very selective with the clothes that I am going to pack, considering there won't be much room.
My family
Out of everything, I will miss my family the most. It is going to be a weird adjustment not seeing them every day, but I know they are just a phone call away. I will miss my mom the most. She is my best friend, and I am going to miss gossiping, watching movies and crafting together. I will miss my dad bothering me every day, and I am sure he will miss having someone to pick on. I will miss my little brothers rolling their eyes at me when I try to talk to them. Most importantly, I will miss sharing laughs at dinnertime. Since my school isn't very far away, they won't be getting me rid of me for good.
I will miss many aspects of home, but I am so excited to start a new journey at school. I can't wait to meet new people, learn new things and create unforgettable memories with my roommates. I am ready for you sophomore year!
