Theater, music, and the arts are usually the most under appreciated and underfunded clubs in high schools, and I still can't think of a good reason why. It's especially common in smaller schools, where there is more likely only a small percent of students involved in these programs. Whatever the reason it is that these programs are often cut, these schools are suffering a significant loss by letting them go.
Everyone's heard that "music makes you smarter," and I believe that that's true. I also believe that performing in plays helps students do better in English classes and that being part of a cast or band teaches valuable team-building skills and relationships. Art classes invite the creativity that is so desperately needed in the adult world today, as well as building foundations for careers such as engineering, graphic design, and architecture. Above all else, the arts allow a release from school work and stress.
Another key element that was particularly important to me is the confidence builder that comes with performing and creating. With the support of a good cast or band and hopefully an awesome director, the arts can bring out things about you that you never knew you had. Putting yourself out there, whether you are auditioning or sharing something you have created, is something that you learn how to do when involved in the arts. This skill becomes helpful when interviewing for a job or giving presentations.
Most schools wouldn't dream of getting rid of sports teams because of the benefits they have and how important they are to students. So, why aren't the arts treated with the same respect? For some reason, it is accepted to have an aversion to theater and music, but not to be nonathletic. There are some students who are sports-oriented, some students who are arts-orientated, and also many who are both. Schools should celebrate diversity of interests and push for involvement in a wide range of activities.
The lessons I've taken from my arts program have stayed with me, and I will continue to learn from performing and creating with others. I think that all students should have the opportunity to experience the arts in school. Even if they aren't involved, it allows for a learned appreciation from other students.
