Of course, there are many bands and artists I would like to see in concert. Only a few of them appeal to me more than others though because of their ability to look and act differently than others while being judged for it by many but taking none of it.
Lady Gaga
Personally, I believe Lady Gaga tops them all. From the variety of unique outfits she has appeared in including the infamous meat dress from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards to her Born This Way track in 2011. In terms of her appearance, she has made many headlines with her extraordinary clothing choices, some of them implying they were bad choices.
However, Gaga paid no attention and continued to perform and make appearances in insane outfits. I praise her for that. Her song Born This Way has inspired millions of “little monsters” to be true to themselves and push aside any hate they receive. Those in fear of being themselves due to other’s thoughts have been inspired to show others who they are and that they were born that way. All because Lady Gaga told them it was okay.
P!nk
P!nk’s inspiring speech to her daughter at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards was incredible. She had explained to her daughter in a simplistic way why she should not change her looks for others, and even so, it rang true to thousands of people watching.
This has not been the first time P!nk has been encouraging. Her 2010 song F**ckin’ Perfect has hit home to many fans. Its lyrics empower those who want to change themselves by telling them that they are perfect. The music video even portrays the difficulties kids, teenagers, and adults deal with including bullying, self-harm, and drug abuse. It’s sadly relatable to many but the song has inspired millions, so thank you P!nk.
Katy Perry
Now, I see Katy Perry slightly similar to Lady Gaga in terms of appearances. Like Gaga, Katy has worn many outfits that made her stand out. These have made her unique just as it has with Gaga, and similarly, Katy did not bother with the judgment of others. Her 2008 song I Kissed a Girl had many talking, wondering, and judging, but Katy, again, did not care. It even inspired some to openly define their sexual orientation.
Miley Cyrus
Everyone can agree that Miley has had her ups and downs in the media. After Hannah Montana, we saw a “rebellious” phase that deemed her “not role model material” anymore as she apparently had been during her Disney Channel days.
A lot of controversy over this issue began, and Miley didn’t care at all about what people said about her. It was her choice how she acted and what she sang about, and what defined a role model anyway?
During this time, people reacted differently to the “new” Miley. We had the parents who believed their young children should no longer be a fan of hers, the ones who had watched Hannah Montana until the end (including myself) and thought she changed for the worse, and the ones who may or may not have watched the show and loved the new Miley.
These opinions were all over the media yet Miley stayed true to herself and did what she liked. It took strength to not succumb to the wants of others.
