University of Maryland, Baltimore County is known for being primarily a STEM school, and most students graduate with a STEM degree. However, students are multidimensional and have a myriad of interests. For example, while a student might be interested in pursuing a PhD in biology, they may also be interested in fashion design. They may try to integrate their interest in fashion with their passion for biology.
Art should not be considered less superior than STEM subjects. If everyone is majoring in STEM fields, how would TV shows be produced and what art museums would exist? What songs would people listen to if everyone is in a STEM field? People should not by any means downgrade the arts when too many are passionate about it. No major is in any way "better" than another. Art majors should not be considered inferior. Additionally, no one should be judged based on their major in general as there is unnecessary stigma, and it is hurtful.
While I’m interested in STEM subjects, I took a lot of art classes in high school from Art 1 to Photo 3 AP. I try to integrate both art and science in my life by continuing to use Photoshop and paint in my spare time. One of my friends is interested in both astronomy and art. Meanwhile one of my other friends is interested in medical illustration. Medical illustration is an example of how individuals integrate science and art cohesively.
While I took photography and chemistry simultaneously at high school, I noticed some similarities as well between the two. While learning about the properties of photographic chemicals, I also learned some chemistry as well. Scientific experiments and exposing pictures to a specific amount of light both require a certain amount of precision as well. When I had to expose a picture to a certain amount of light, I had to account for how the picture would look in the end and think about the required settings. Art and science are more similar than people think.
If you’re someone who is interested in both art and science, go for it! Don’t think that your passion is any less important because other people disregard it. When it comes to many jobs out there, employers want their future employees to be innovative. They don't want just someone who listens to orders mindlessly. Artistic talent comes in handy, and will help individuals be even better at their job.
This particular video actually inspired me to write this.
While this video is from Barbie, it proves a good point--that art and science should not divided, but rather co-exist. It’s why there’s a new initiative to create “STEAM” within school districts so that people understand the importance of art within their communities. To those who are unaware, the acronym STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Previously, the acronym "STEM" was more popular, and to some extent, it still is. However, hopefully after some time, STEAM will replace the traditional STEM acronym.
If society continues to help art and science co-exist, communities will thereby create more intuitive and well-rounded individuals who are creative thinkers.
