Mirriam-Webster's Dictionary defines "thankfulness" as, "conscious of benefit received," "expressive of thanks," and "well pleased." As far as words go, it appears to be a relatively simple concept. However, as most everyone is aware, feeling thankfulness and showing thankfulness are two entirely separate things.
There are no specific steps one must follow in order to portray one's thankfulness, but showing it is important, no matter by what means. Whether you receive a gift or a compliment or even a kind gesture, the words "thank you," are expected because it's polite. Not to mention, it is incredibly effective! Never underestimate the power of words. Another method of showing thanks is hand-written notes. In this world of technology and instant gratification, a hand-written note goes a long way. It shows that you appreciated what you received to such a degree that you took time out of your day, sat down and expressed your thankfulness via the lost art of writing your words out by hand rather than hastily typing on a phone screen.
So why is showing your thankfulness so important? 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, "Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." Thankfulness isn't something we show because we are obligated. Thankfulness isn't something we show because we want to preserve the feelings of others. Thankfulness is something we show because it gives glory to God the Father who made us all. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17). It's important to show and give thanks for every good and perfect thing we encounter.
On the flip side, it's also important to be thankful for the bad things that happen to us. In order for brass to be forged, it has to be heated to almost 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, it can be molded and formed into beautiful creations. In the same way, we must be thankful for the hard things we go through so that we can become something beautiful.
We must show thankfulness for everything we encounter, every gift we receive, and everything we experience, good and bad. It's the right thing to do, and it gives glory to the Lord.
Happy Thanksgiving!
