Los Angeles has many incredible museums to visit from small, strange ones like the Museum of Death to better-known tourist attractions such as the Getty Center. You can find all types of art ranging from Renaissance classics to Modernist creations and almost everything in between, however, if you can't find what you're looking for now it probably will come around in the form of a temporary, traveling exhibition. These exhibits range from year-long stays in large museums or just 30 days in a pop-up space or gallery. Here's a list of some of the must-see temporary exhibits in Los Angeles:
1. Break Bread LA (Think Tank Gallery)
In collaboration with Keith Magruder (Baker's Son) and Banksy collaborator Scott Hove, Think Tank Gallery has opened a new art installation in its Downtown LA space called "Break Bread LA". Think Tank describes the installation as "30 days of arts, culture and cuisine in a whimsical — and twisted — candyland". The space is 9 thousand square-feet of cake chambers, pillars and chandeliers including an incredible floor-to-ceiling cake. The exhibit also has an edgy, unexpected side to "contrast that ‘bougie’ cake look", according to artist Scott Hove. With a life-size ice cream truck, a Zumanity themed bar and lounge, and popup coffee shop by Stumptown Coffee, the space is a unique setting for Think Tank's nightly events and Feastly's dining experiences, held during the installation's 30-day run. The twist of the installation? Nothing is actually edible! I know it's pretty disappointing but the amazing events being held there are worth visiting the space for and of course, the Instagrams, duh.
2. Infinity Mirrored Room (The Broad Museum)
The full title of the installation is called the "Infinity Mirrored Room -- The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away" by Yayoi Kusama but it has become known simply as the "Infinity Room". While it looks infinitely large, the experiential artwork only fits one visitor at a time and visitors are only allowed to stay for 45 seconds. The Broad's description of the Infinity Room: "A room is completely covered with mirrors and dozens of LED lights hang from the ceiling. As the multitude of lights reflect, they accumulate and expand exponentially. This sense of infinity has been with Kusama from the beginning, always looking for clearer ways to express itself. Inside "Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away", Kusama’s world is the viewer’s world". The installation will be available to visit, free of charge at the Broad Museum until Sepetember 2016 with no end date set.
3. Factory of the Sun (MOCA)
German filmmaker and writer Hito Steyerl’s "Factory of the Sun" opened very recently on Feb. 21, 2016 at MOCA Grand Avenue in Downtown LA near the Broad Museum. In the immersive work, which debuted at the 2015 German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Steyerl "probes the pleasures and perils of image circulation in a moment defined by the unprecedented global flow of data," according to MOCA. The installation is a single channel HD video that is 21 minutes long and contains different genres of footage including news reportage, documentary film, video games and internet dance videos. Audience members are sat in theater like seating and watch the video in a unique and captivating space. The installation will be at MOCA until Sept. 12, 2016.
