Over the course of my life, I have received many bouquets of flowers. Whether they were for birthdays, performances, or graduations, flowers are always the go-to gift for important events in a girl’s life. Personally, flowers confuse me and I don’t understand their popularity. They last for days, then sit rotting on your counter until you have the time to throw them away. I’ve heard many arguments for why flowers are romantic or signify some kind of deep emotion, however, I find them to be the safe, obvious choice. Flowers usually mean, “These were pretty, so I thought of you.” I’m tired of compliments revolving around my physical attributes. Why can’t I get a whoopee cushion because no matter what I’ll always make you laugh? If a guy, or anyone for that matter, wants to give me a gift, I would never say no. However, I do have some suggestions for presents I would cherish much more than a short-lived bouquet of roses.
Your favorite novel.
Nothing can tell me more about a person than their favorite book. Whether it’s a thrilling spy novel, an introspective collection of poems, or a sappy love story, I’ll learn something new about the person from whom I’m receiving it. Also, it’s a great book recommendation, and who doesn’t love that?
A box of chocolates.
If you’re in the cliche mood, I don’t know anyone who would be upset over getting food, nonetheless chocolate. A box of truffles is the best comfort food around, and it can easily be shared with another person.
A handwritten note.
This is for when you want to be romantic but also want to put more time in than picking up flowers at the corner store. Even if you write the most cheesy love poem ever created, I’ll still appreciate it because I know you put the time in to be genuine and sincere.
A mixtape.
Nowadays making a personalized mixtape or playlist is easier than ever. You just have to check a few boxes off on Spotify and boom, you’re done. Put together a group of songs that recreate the feeling you get when we’re together.
A photo album.
While Facebook albums are nice, there’s nothing like looking through physical photos. Remembering fun times, reliving great adventures, and looking back on amazing memories shared together produces a special type of nostalgia that only photos can create.
