Are You Prepared For The MCAT?

The months leading up to your MCAT test date, can be some of the most stressful days of your college life. So many things depend on this test and your scores. There are so many resources available to you, varying from books, websites, and apps. Once you start looking online for resources, it is very easy to become overwhelmed. As I have been preparing for the MCAT, I have come across many wonderful resources that are free or cost very little.

1. Khan Academy


Khan Academy teamed up with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) to create a set of free study resources for the MCAT. There are videos covering all of the material for the MCAT. There are also practice passages and questions for each subject. You can watch the videos and answer the practice questions as many times as you need. You should not use the videos as your only source of preparation. This should be used as a supplement resource along with other resources.

2. MCAT-Review

MCAT-Review.org has very concise notes for each of the MCAT topics. It is a great resource to look over a subject or topic closer to the day of your test for a refresher. They also have a multitude of tips for studying and for the day of your test. With their bullet point setup, it is very easy to navigate to the subjects and topics that you are looking for.

3. Premed HQ

Premed HQ is a free MCAT prep course that is very similar to Khan Academy. Premed HQ has a few questions specifically for each video. Underneath the video, they hit the high points that they really want you to take away from the video. The website is very user friendly. They also have a premed guide that will help you understand the application timeline and process and many other aspects of preparing for medical school.

4. The Princeton Review

While Princeton Review does have many materials and resources that you must pay for, you can sign up for a free practice test. This test is a full-length practice test given under the same testing conditions as the actual exam. You'll learn what you need to work on more and what you are prepared for. This will show you what to expect on test day. You will also get a personalized score report that shows your strengths and weaknesses.

5. Test Prep Practice

Test Prep Practice has multiple practice tests for the reading comprehension, biological sciences, physical sciences, and chemistry sections of the MCAT. All of these tests are free. They explain what the right and wrongs answers are and why they are right or wrong.

6. Next Step Test Prep

If you follow the link below, you can get one full length free exam and a free half length diagnostic. In order to see the free test, you must scroll almost all the way down to the bottom of the page to right before the FAQ section. If you choose to, you can pay for more tests and diagnostics.

7. MCAT For Me

This website has multiple resources for you to use. They have practice tests, flashcards, study programs, videos, and much more. There is also a "Question of the Day" to give you the opportunity to answer a different question from the MCAT every day. They can help you figure out which set of books are best for you and which ones you should avoid.

8. Kaplan Test Prep

Kaplan Test Prep has many resources. While many of the resources are not free, some are. After you choose the MCAT as your test, you will see an option for "Free MCAT Resources" on the top dropdown options. They have many free practice resources and resources to help you prepare for the MCAT and medical school.

9. Association of American Medical College


The AAMC website is your go-to website for anything you need to know about medical school, the MCAT, and the application process. The link below will take you to a section of the website that breaks down every section of the MCAT to explain what you should expect for each part. They show you sample questions and have video tutorials. You can explore each of the foundational concepts covered on the MCAT. The more you familiarize yourself with these concepts and what they cover, the easier studying will be.

I hope that this list has helped you find more resources for studying for the MCAT. You will have to pay for some of your resources, but these websites are great, free supplemental resources. If you use your time and resources wisely, you are sure to be successful. Take advantage of as many free resources and practice tests as you can. Immerse yourself in this test and do everything you can to prepare for test day.

Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine.
