Are We Free?

In a country run by the government, is anything we do a choice?

Are We Free?

Are we free? From the moment we are born, we are told what to do and how to act. We are taught to speak and to walk. We are sent to school to make good grades, which we do to get into a good college, where we go to get a good job, where we work to pay bills and taxes for the rest of our lives. We are born into a system of rules and regulations guided by our need to govern ourselves. No, we are not free.

Now, some may say that this isn’t true. They may say that we have the Bill of Rights and the Constitution, leaving us completely independent from outside forces. However, it is these very things that keep us from living the lives we want. Everything is controlled by the government. I know, clichéd right? But it’s true. One very prominent example would be marriage. Up until very recently, it was illegal to marry your one true love if they were the same gender as you. The leaders of this nation, the ones who promise when they take office to support the people, made it their business to decide who I can and can’t marry? And now that I have their say so, it’s okay? That’s horrifying!

Now this isn’t the only discrepancy. We are shackled to the government against our wants. I have to take money out of my hard earned paycheck for taxes that help almost no one, and social security that I will never get to claim. Why can these people - who are mostly one-percenters by the way - take my money without my say so? Did I sign something saying that I wanted to pay taxes? Did I agree to something without reading the terms and conditions? I don’t remember saying that rich millionaires could take my minimum wage paycheck and make themselves richer. And yes, some may argue that this money goes to roads, and schools, and neighborhood clean-ups. I fully acknowledge that a percent of this money does go to help the greater good. But, at the same time, most government officials are paid way more than the average worker. Perhaps if we cut their paychecks instead of mine, we could do way more with America!

So, one more time - for the people in the back - we are not free. We are enslaved to America’s fascist government. We will not be free of this until we decide we want to be. So, go to some rallies. Support political candidates that want to end big business involvement in the government, and end the extreme taxation on the poor and start taxing the rich. My personal favorite is Bernie Sanders, but you can find your own at http://www.politics1.com/p2016.htm. Happy hunting!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
