When you tell someone you are a sorority girl, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most people automatically assume that you open your legs for anyone. Or what about the one that every sorority girl is extremely dumb? But the truth is I am not my stereotype. Here are some of the most common stereotypes of sorority girls.
"So you basically just pay for your friends."
Actually no, I did not pay for these friendships. Yes, I pay dues. But the bonds I've created with this group of girls is priceless. I could never put a price on the memories and the fun I've had with my sisters. And if you believe I've paid for my friends, then this was the best money I have ever spent.
"All sorority girls are dumb."
To be honest, I hear this one more than anything. Mostly it is because we have been portrayed in movies as dumb blondes who just party all the time. But in reality, to be a Greek, you have to have a certain GPA. As higher women, we actually push ourselves to be above average when it comes to academics. Our sorority has one of the highest GPAs on our campus and we are proud of that!
"All they do is party and drink."
False. Yes, we like to party. Yes, we like to drink. Who doesn't? We're in college. But that's not all we do. When it comes to having fun, we're more content with having a game night and just laying around with a bunch of food. We watch plenty of rom-coms and eat ice cream. To be honest, the best nights we've had we're the ones we've spent laying around and watching Disney movies.
"They haze."
We. Do. Not. Haze.
"They're the 'white' sorority."
There is no such thing as a "white" sorority. We are in fact the most diverse sorority on campus and are very proud of that. We accept anyone who proves to have our core values, regardless of color.
"Daddy pays for everything."
A lot of people feel like every sorority girl has a rich daddy who literally hands them an allowance every week. This is not true. Most of us have jobs just to pay our dues. Actually, some of us have 2 or 3 jobs just to pay for it.
"You're a girly girl."
This is by far the most false stereotype. Yes sometimes we have to dress up for formals, socials, etc, but that doesn't make us girly. In fact, some of our sisters tomboys, myself included that can't stand the thought of wearing a dress. But when the time comes, you better believe we look great in our heels and pearls!
We are not our stereotype. We are an intelligent group of women. And one day, people will see us as the leaders we will prove ourselves to be.
