The Year Of Lasts

Is senior year really a goodbye?

The Year Of Lasts
Odyssey

Everyone keeps saying that "Senior year is the year of lasts," but is it really the last time we say goodbye? With only a few weeks left before school starts and this year begins, we should take some time to understand that senior year is not going to be perfect, which is completely okay. Due to it being last year of high school, all seniors are adament about having "the best year ever", at least in comparison to previous years in high school. This means that there is an extreme amount of pressure to have every plan perfect, every class amazing and every other aspect of our social lives to be recklessly elaborate. It is no longer about enjoying our time, but making certain we have the best time, so much so that we forget about having a good time. We become consumed by perfecting plans to actually live them out. This unfortuante reality may make senior year the busiest and by far the most stressful year in high school, at least where social life is concered. Junior year may be the most academincally rigorous for most, but senior year by far is more socially active due to it being the "last time" to be with our "high school friends". It is a time to reconcile differences and ignore petty drama that may have sprung up in the past and enjoy childhood before it ends. However, the ideal perfect senior year has always been imaginary; there is no perfect senior year, only what one makes of it. Rather than expecting it to be perfect, enjoy the time without worry. High school does not end once one receives a diploma. It ends when we loose that childish part of ourselves.

This year is a glimpse into the rest of our lives. It is a time to reflect and contemplate on ourselves while mainting a social environment that will leave us with little to no regrets. It is not time to savour but remember our childhood as we ease ourselves into adulthood. Our lives are divided into a series of windows, as they are phases within our lives. Many argue that we need to see past these windows and observe the bigger picture, but we first need to crack it open. It is time to take a glimpse outside this window, and just feel the direction of the breeze. A thin glass separates us from the world making senior year a beginning to another phase. Rather than looking out the glass, we should be seeing the reflections on the surface, and contemplating how they have led us to where we are and where we are going. Our senior year is one that should not be approached as the last year, but the first time we are recieving a glimpse of a much larger, multidimentional world. Senior year is not about having a perfect year, but one that is memorable and will propel us forward. After all, we are breaking the window, together.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
