I am one to pick up a pen rather than a paintbrush when the creative juices start flowing. I never drew a straight line or a perfect circle when it came to seventh grade art class. My clay hand came out a little nubby. My tissue paper tree resembled a blend of throw up. In summation, I avoided art class in high school and never considered it in college until I realized that makeup made me more comfortable with art because it is art.
First off, art is the kind of thing where if you say it's art, it's art. Sure, someone probably questioned why I wore a deep brown bronzer all winter. But I’m perfecting my art.
Some of us will be finer artists than others, but some of us prefer realism. We’ll call my face realistic. I can’t contour my larger nose or make my face a different shape just with a darker pencil shade, but I can watch YouTube tutorials of other people doing it. Watching YouTube videos of makeup is like going to a museum. You get to appreciate the work of others and then question everything you do.
I can, however, make my blonde eyelashes come alive with mascara, make my red face all one shade of tan and enjoy experimenting with eye shadows that hide every time I give my squinty smile.
Makeup is an art that washes away. It's like sidewalk chalk in that way. It fades, chips and smudges. It’s something you can appreciate for a while, but no amount of setting powders or sprays will preserve its beauty forever.
That’s what we must remember about this art; it is not everlasting. Your face will once again, be your naked face. You must appreciate that your face is one of beauty with or without the shimmers, glimmers and highlighters.
I encourage you to experiment with any kind of art. Maybe your art is simple and includes a quick swipe of lip balm. Maybe your art is expanding and purple eyeliner lines to come out and play. Maybe your art is complex and you can turn yourself into a completely different person.
There are many forms of art art, so you should not bash someone for would prefer to add a layer than be natural.
Critiquing art is foolish because your mom certainly didn’t tell you that your clay hand looked nubby, she probably told you it was the most beautiful clay hand she’s ever seen.
Appreciate the differences of art and be happy that you can experiment with it if you choose. Some of us will stick with the our creativity or talent, but some will spend hours trying out new things. I encourage everyone to stop critiquing the kind of art they could never dream of doing.
