It's more than just a building

Why You Should Apply To The Student Center
Vinnie Surace

When I applied for a job at the student center my freshman year, I had no idea what I was doing. I applied because I needed money and that was really it. I didn't get the job, but my roommate did so that was awkward. I applied again the next year and to my surprise, this time around, I got it! This time, I wanted it not just because of the money, but because I saw how happy the job made my roommate and the family she. I wanted that too. Here are 9 reasons you should apply to be a part of the best staff on campus.

1. Family.

Like I said, we are the best family on campus. This is not just something we say. This staff will go to the ends of the earth for you. No matter what goes on in my life, I know someone will help me out with covering shifts, sending me nice texts, or buying me food just to see me smile. It's so wonderful to come in every day to work and know it's going to be fun because you work with such a good group of people.

2. Professional Staff.

My bosses are actually some of the coolest people I know. They are all so awesome at their jobs that it makes my job so much easier. They are also some of the most important members of the family. They are some of my favorite people on the staff and I consider them to be my friends which is not something you can't always find at other jobs. They really care about me as a person not just as an employee. I have never been scared to talk to them about anything. And sometimes it freaks me out how much I'm gonna miss our GAs when the graduate at the end of the year.

3. Shifts.

The shifts aren't long, usually 2-3 hours which seems like nothing to a girl who are worked 14 hour shifts before. They usually fly by and you are never bored. There is always something to do or something going on. People watching is definitely one of the best parts of the job. Who doesn't love watching what goes on in the Student Center every day and now you can get paid for doing it.

4. Areas.

As a really outgoing person who could talk to everyone, I work at the Student Center Information Desk but if you are a little more reserved maybe the Gameroom and Prof's Place attendant is the right place for you. Or for the more creative type, maybe the Marketing team is your place. We have a place for all types of people on this staff.

5. I Don't Know Everything.

One of the most popular questions I get about working at the Infor Desk is "How do you know all the info?" and to be honest I don't. But I know how to find it. You are taught every part of your job and you aren't expected to know any of it in advance. That info I didn't know, I learned by experience. I learned how to make IDs and how to sell tickets and how to do so many things. But there are still things I have to ask about and that's okay at this job.

6. Transferable Skills.

This job is crawling with things you can use the rest of your life. I have learned how to have a professional conversation on the phone, how to work with a diverse staff, how to interact with other professionals including the President of the University, how to become a leader among students my same age and older. I have even been able to attend conferences and events that will look great on future resumes. This job is going to be something everyone asks about in future interviews because there is so much I have learned here that will help me in my life.

7. Events.

We have a ton of fun things we do as a staff but my favorite things are what we do for everyone else. Profs Spotlight (the first Monday of every month) and Trivia Tuesdays are some of my favorite nights. It's really cool to see how much your fellow students love the events you put on. But my real favorite is the Haunted Student Center. A whole day full of little kids coming to the Student Center for a safe place to trick-or-treat. I have never been more proud of something because I spent the whole day seeing big smiling faces and I got to be apart of making those happen.

8. All Staffs/Team Building.

A huge part of this job is being a team. We have monthly events where we all get together just to have fun. Plus, you have a team where you compete in little challenges to win prizes at the end of the semester. You team becomes your lifeline and you may get a little too competitive when it comes to winning team challenges which are mostly just games that we get way too into.

9. I Love My Job.

I have worked a lot of places in my young life and I have never actually hated a job but I have never liked one more than I like this one. My job doesn't seem like work, I don't hate going to work each day, I don't dislike anyone on our staff, I choose to go out with the staff on our nights off and I choose to stop by the desk to say hi almost every day. I truly love my job.

So if you want a chance to be apart of the best thing on campus, apply to the student center on our website (http://www.rowan.edu/studentaffairs/studentcenter/...) by Wednesday February 3r and attend one of our information sessions on Tuesday, January 26th at 10am in Room 127 of the Student Center, Friday, January 29th at 4pm in Room 221C of the Student Center, or Tuesday, February 2nd at 11am in Room 127 of the Student Center to learn more. Be apart of the best staff at Rowan, you won't regret it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
