Feminism has been a major news point for several years now. This has a lot to do with current politics and the uprise of media attention on women's issues. There have also been endless celebrities praising feminism and talking about what it means to them and others around them. This has all been great for the feminist movement and the causes it supports. Unfortunately, there will always be those who disagree, and many of them disagree due to inaccurate information. I've seen a lot of bad info being spread around on the internet, so I'd like to take a moment to reply to some of it.
They say: "Feminists are man-haters." I say: "Feminists want to be equal with men."
Feminism is in no way or has ever been about being better than men. True feminists strive to be equal to men on all grounds, be it religious, social, economical, and emotional. Equality of the sexes is our goal, not gaining power.
They say: "Feminism is just a trend." I say: "Feminism has existed for centuries."
Feminism hasn't come here fast, and it's not leaving anytime soon. There have been women supporting and building up women for centuries. Many artists, writers, and singers have been in support of women for decades. Many cultures have highly valued the contributions women have made towards them. It's not a trend, and it won't fade out like one.
They say: "If women can hit men, I want to hit them back." I say: "Why would you want to hit anybody?"
This is one of the most annoying and ignorant responses to feminism I've ever seen on the internet. Why is being equal equated with physical violence? It's not okay for women to physically abuse men or vice versa. Just don't hit people.
They say: "Feminists are just ugly, single women." I say: "Have you ever actually seen one?"
If you think feminists are ugly, bitter women, you're not looking at women properly. First of all, some of the most prominent feminists in America include Beyonce, Emma Watson, and Ariana Grande. If they're ugly, I'd love to see what beautiful is considered to be. But the more important thing to note is that there are no ugly women, only judgmental people.
They say: "Women already have equal rights." I say: "Check the math, dude."
One out of every six women is sexually assaulted, versus one in thirty-three men. (Both of which are awful statistics). Studies have demonstrated the prominence of the wage gap. Women are frequently disregarded in politics, the medical field, and STEM tracks. A wealth of information is only a Google search away, so check your information.
They say: "You don't need to be so angry about it." I say: "Pick up a history book."
Battles have never been won by being gentle. People have always had to fight for what they believed in. Check out the French Revolution and the Revolutionary War. If those people had been calm and civil, they would have been trampled on.
There are too many senseless arguments for me to get into here. Hopefully, if you're reading this, you've learned a thing or two about feminism and maybe are willing to look at more. Many social justice issues are best learned about through research, dedication, and a passion for what's right, and this one is no exception. A world where genders were equal would be a great one. With enough work, that may not be as far off as we think.
