We all have that one song. A song that get's you out of bed in the morning, or quickens your pace as your walking to your next class. A song that makes you want to dance around your room in your unswear, hair-brush microphone in hand, screaming at the top of your lungs. A song that occupies such a special place in your heart because of how deeply it's message resonates with you, or it's tied to a moment that you'll never forget. These songs are timeless, their messages speaking to all walks of life during all different time periods. Listed below are seven songs that have been released in recent years that I believe possess certain anthemic qualities that will stand the test of time.
1. Float On - Modest Mouse
Even though the album that this track is featured on (Good News For People Who Love Bad News) came out in 2004, it's already showing it's quality by the radio play and just sheer attention it receives. Having produced six albums over the course of twelve years, "Float On" is still Modest Mouse's number one song on Spotify; having been played 73,422,717 and counting. The song just serves as another reminder that no matter what shitty event happens, maybe backing your car into a cop car the other day or running your mouth off a bit too much, we'll all Float On okay.
2. Dog Days Are Over - Florence + The Machine
Everyone goes through those periods in there life where nothing is going the way you want it to. The world and everyone is against you, you can do no right. It's important to remember during this time that you will get through it. That test you failed won't matter this time next year, and that crush you had on that kid from you Psych class won't be a concern in a few weeks. Florence + The Machine created a beautiful track that reassures you everything will be okay, the time for happiness is now and the Dog Days Are Over.
3. Young Volcanoes - Fall Out Boy
Through their call to action lyrics, Fall Out Boy's only acoustic-esque track from their 2015 release, Save Rock and Roll, prompts their young listeners to take action against today's world and really claim it as their own. The bridge of this song states, "Tonight the foxes hunt the hounds" and it's finally time for the underdogs to win. The overall message of this track is that it's time for the youth to make their mark, break down old barriers, and maybe be just as unpredictable as Young Volcanoes.
4. Your Graduation - Modern Baseball
This one is for the recent high school graduates or incoming college freshmen, you know who you are. Life changes after graduation. You drift away from your best-friend. You break-up with your significant other of two years. You change and that's okay- normal even. This song speaks to those who are having a hard time moving on, and rather than trying to get you to put it all in the past, it helps you embrace your feelings. So for all of you who are experiencing the transition from high school senior to college freshmen, just remember one thing: things might change after Your Graduation, and that's okay.
5. Could Have Been Me - The Struts
"Don't want to live as an untold story". From the very first line of the song, The Struts jump into their worry of living with regret over something they didn't do. The chorus of the song goes on to convey the band's feelings towards life in general. Wanting to experience everything life has to offer whether it be good or bad. It's about that feeling at the end of the day knowing you've done everything in your power to truly succeed. Follow in The Struts' footsteps so you don't live your life thinking, "Damn, that Could Have Been Me".
6. Another Night on Mars - The Maine
This one goes out to your closest friends, the ones who make you feel less alien. Your squad, your person, whomever they may be. Unlike most of their other songs, "Another Night on Mars" features all of the members of The Maine singing in a harmonious chorus, as one. It reminds us just how important our friends can be, which is something that we should never forget. "What's another night on mars? With friends like ours, anywhere is home."
7. Figuring It Out - SWMRS
Another one for the college kids. You don't have to know what you want to do with the rest of your life. A 5-year plan would be smart, but it's not required. You CAN change your major 15 times before you decide on one you want to stick with. There are many points in your life where you question your purpose and what you're meant to do. You're not alone, SWMRS feels the same way, and they say so with the line "Was i made to function, or create, or just get bored?". You don't have to know the answer to that right away, it's alright it you're still Figuring It Out.
For most, it's a time of hard and fast decisions. Finding who your people are, what you want to be when you grow up, whether to have Frosted Flakes or Fruit Loops for dinner because you chose to buy textbooks instead of groceries. It's a time of getting so caught up trying to be an adult that you forget about the important things or the ridiculous notion that everything might actually be okay in the end. That's why we have these anthem-like songs to remind us whenever we need a little reassurance.
