Since 1939 Disney has released animated feature films to critical and commercial success. A number of these movies have graduated to the world of live-action cinema with more recent examples including "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Mirror, Mirror" (creative renditions of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves"), "Maleficent" (a prequel to "Sleeping Beauty") and "Cinderella."

It has become clear that this trend will only continue with a slew of upcoming animation-to-live-action movies leaving the Disney fan to rejoice, groan or simply scratch their head.

Aladdin

This live action-spin will be a prequel to the 1992 animated version of the Middle Eastern folk tale. It will focus primarily on the Genie. The movie has been styled as a comedy and is aptly titled "Genies."

Is Disney releasing it: Yes

Done Before: Besides the animated version, Aladdin's story has never had an exclusive theatrical release.

Verdict: Rejoice! My only hesitation is that Robin Williams, who perfected the Genie in the animated version, won’t have a hand in the project.

The Jungle Book

This adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s short story collection will receive two live-action remakes in the next two years. "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau leads the first boasting a voice cast of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Christopher Walken, Scarlett Johansson, Lupita Nyong and Idris Elba. The second is headed by Andy Serkis and is dubbed "Jungle Book: Origins." It wields the acting prowess of Benedict Cumberbatch, Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. It will likely be a darker version and more true to the source material.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes to Favreau, no to Serkis.

Done Before: Disney released a reasonably received live action version in 1994.

Verdict: Rejoice for both! They are well armed with directors and casts.

Mulan

Based off a legendary Chinese ballad, Disney’s 1998 version of the story brought tremendous success. Now the film will be brought to life in a project that has no directorial or casting ties at this time.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes

Done Before: There has never been a live-action theatrical release of Mulan.

Verdict: It’s hard to say. One of the main appeals of the animated version was the spectacular musical numbers, and live-action reboots typically omit such creative outlets.

Dumbo

"Dumbo," which hasn’t been touched since 1941, will be unearthed by Director Tim Burton and is reportedly adding an additional subplot to complement the tale.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes

Done Before: Never.

Verdict: Rejoice! Tim Burton won’t let us down.

Winnie the Pooh

A. A. Milne’s classic collection of stories centered around Christopher Robin’s stuffed animal friends has been a Disney go-to since its first release in 1977. The focus will be on an adult version of Christopher Robin.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes

Done Before: Never.

Verdict: I’m scratching my head on this one.

Beauty and the Beast

This version will closely follow the 1991 hit movie. The film stars Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, Kevin Kline, Ian McKellen and Ewan McGregor. The movie will be a musical borrowing unashamedly from the Broadway version.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes

Done Before: Not really. Unless you count the 2011 movie "Beastly" with Vanessa Hudgens (I don’t).

Verdict: Rejoice!

The Little Mermaid

Initially announced with Sofia Coppola at the helm to direct, this live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 version remains director-less for now. It will more than likely follow more closely the tragic Hans Christian Anderson tale.

Is Disney releasing it: Nope! Universal Studios has a go at it.

Done Before: Not in American theaters.

Verdict: I would have felt more comfortable knowing that it was in the hands of Coppola. But hey, who can say?

Pinocchio

Like "The Jungle Book," this 1940 Disney classic is getting multiple versions. Only this time the Italian novel by Carlo Collodi is rumored to receive three artistic interpretations. Disney’s version has secured Peter Hedges ( from "What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and "The Odd Life of Timothy Green") to write. The Jim Henson company (of Muppet lore) has employed Guillermo del Toro to direct a stop motion version. AND Warner Bros. threw their hat in the ring with Paul Thomas Anderson to write (and potentially direct) and Robert Downey Jr. to play Geppetto.

Is Disney releasing it: Disney is. Jim Henson company is. Warner Bros. is.

Done Before: Yes. 1994 starring Martin Landau. Flop. (With a sequel which also flopped.) Again in 2002 (0 percent on Rotten Tomatoes).

Verdict: In spite of former flops, I would say that the talent behind each project is hopeful.

Fantasia

The original 1940 animated version consisted of eight classical musical segments and their animated interpretation. This live-action remake is based off of the closing sequence “Night on Bald Mountain.”

Is Disney releasing it: Yes.

Done Before: In 2010 a live version was released of "Fantasia" scene “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” starring Nicolas Cage. It received decent reviews.

Verdict: It is hard to see the vision behind this one just yet. I worry it won’t translate into a full length live action film.

Peter Pan and Tinker Bell

Disney’s 1953 movie based off of the play version of J. M. Barrie’s classic story "Peter Pan" will receive two very different live action nods. "Pan," starring Hugh Jackman, Garrett Hedlund, Rooney Mara and Levi Miller, depicts a prequel detailing the origins of Peter and the villain Captain Hook. It has been internationally released to mixed reviews. Reese Witherspoon will produce and star in "Tink," a live-action version of the character Tinker Bell from the story.

Is Disney releasing it: Nope. Neither of the two.

Done Before: Universal released the first and only live action "Peter Pan" film in 2003, barring movies such as "Hook" with Robin Williams, which put a spin on the tale by having a grown-up Peter. Tinker Bell was also depicted in "Hook."

Verdict: "Pan" seems like it could work with the quality cast on board and while Reese Witherspoon would appear to be the ideal "Tink," it might be a hard to take the movie seriously if not done properly.

Chip and Dale

First introduced in 1943 through a series of animated short films, Chip ‘n’ Dale became a very successful comedic duo, eventually being adapted into an animated show "Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers." Now Disney will follow successful ventures like the "Smurfs" films and the "Alvin and the Chipmunks" franchise by putting these animated characters into live action situations.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes.

Done Before: No.

Verdict: As long as the animation/live action combination is the only thing it steals from "Smurfs."

Prince Charming

Whether the counterpart to 1937’s "Snow White," 1950’s "Cinderella" or 1959’s "Sleeping Beauty," Prince Charming has been a faithful stock character. This adaptation, however, will apparently focus on the famed Prince’s “loser brother” who was a misfit in the Charming residence. In any case, it will give us a live-action glimpse at the generic favorite.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes.

Done Before: More or less. He was in the latest Cinderella film. He also was sort of depicted in "Mirror, Mirror." (Although I think his most humorous stint was in last year’s musical "Into the Woods."

Verdict: This could go either way.

The Sword and the Stone

This movie came out in 1963 based loosely on the novel of the same name by T.H. White. All we know so far is that "Game of Thrones" writer Bryan Cogman will be writing the script.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes.

Done Before: Nope. There are too many live action King Arthur films to list here, but suffice it to say this particular story hasn’t had a live action take before.

Verdict: This could be cool given the right cast. Let’s just hope that Cogman cuts down some of the racier content from his previous writing ventures. It is still Disney after all!

Cruella

Cruella De Vil first appeared in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel "The Hundred and One Dalmatians" but entered Disney villain infamy in the 1961 animated version of the book. The movie will borrow the talents of the writer Aline Brosh McKenna whose latest project was the aforementioned "Cinderella."

Is Disney releasing it: Yes.

Done Before: Yes. In 1996 Glenn Close perfected the role of Cruella in "101 Dalmatians and again in the 2000 sequel "102 Dalmatians."

Verdict: I think this will succeed. Although it is unclear who will play the lead, Close will be producing.

Alice Through the Looking Glass

In 1951, Disney did a dual adaptation of two Lewis Carroll novels from the same universe: "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass." Tim Burton will create a sequel to his successful live-action take in 2010.

Is Disney releasing it: Yes.

Done Before: Besides Burton’s there were three silent films and three films with sound predating the Disney animated version followed by two musicals.

Verdict: I think it will be about on par with Burton’s first, which was well worth the watch.
