Time Magazine

"Time" Magazine's editors choose an individual or individuals who perceive to be the most influential annually, regardless if the influential person is, or was, for good, such as Pope Francis, or for poor, such as Adolf Hitler. This year, German Chancellor Angela Merkel became Time's Person of the Year.

Merkel, the most powerful woman in the world and second most powerful person in the world according to Forbes which is the highest ranking for any woman, has portrayed herself as easygoing and judicious. She acquired the nickname 'Mutti,' or mother of the nation.

Merkel is the daughter of a Lutheran minister and teacher, and was raised in East Germany pre-the fall of the Berlin Wall. She became a successful physicist — until 1989.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, and Merkel acquired a passion for politics. in 1990, she was appointed to Germany's parliament. Not even a year later she acquired her Cabinet post.

In 2005, Merkel became Germany's first female chancellor, Germany's highest office and position. She still positively holds this position.

The announcement of Merkel's win was made on NBC's "Today Show" this past Wednesday, Dec. 9. Nancy Gibbs, Time's Managing Editor, claimed the choice of Merkel's win was influenced due to her response to the economic crisis of Greece, the refugee situation and the consistent terrorist attacks that have occurred. Each time, Merkel stood up.

"No one was tested the way she was... She has stepped up in a way that was uncharacteristic, even for her," said Gibbs.

Merkel is in her third term, which has only occurred two times prior. She has been the front person of the migrant crisis, announcing Germany would allow Syrian refugees in who are attempting to escape the war zone. According to the German government, the country can have more than a million refugees at the end of this year.

Merkel is well-known to following public demand and wants and desires high public approval ratings. She is well-loved in Germany and well-respected worldwide. Time's Person of the Year: "Mutti."

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
