Anchor Splash!

What’s better than watching boys dance in speedos? Doing so for a great cause.

As summer comes to a close, Delta Gamma’s are using every opportunity and excuse to be in a pool. Anchor Splash is the biggest philanthropy event that Delta Gamma holds on an annual basis at the campus aquatic center.

This past Sunday, several fraternities paired up with DG to help raise money for the visually impaired by doing swimming relays, performing dances and participating in synchronized swimming routines.

Anchor Splash has so many fun aspects, like teaching each fraternity its own dance routine, painting a banner to hang outside their houses, finding custom team speedos, and promoting a great cause.

When asking Amy Ackerman, Delta Gamma’s Vice President of Foundation, why Anchor Splash is so important to her, she responded with, “It’s a unique fundraiser that Delta Gamma has been doing for a long time. It involves a lot of organizations and attracts a huge crowd! I love our foundation and it’s mission, Service for Sight. So anyway I can contribute makes me overwhelmingly happy.”

Service for Sight is Delta Gamma’s very own foundation. Every cent they earn goes directly to those who struggle with visual impairments by helping to donate money to advance eye care research. Last year, DG raised just over $8,800 and DG’s decided to take it to a new level with a higher goal for this year’s event. This year’s goal was to raise $10,000 and DG’s helped to raise just over $18,000 at this year’s event.

On top of some friendly competition, each fraternity elects a person from their team to be a candidate to win the Anchorman award and this year, Alpha Tau Omega’s Chandler Frutiger, received the most votes! Sigma Chi received first place, consisting of dance, relays and house banner competition followed by Beta Theta Pi and Sig Ep. Anchor Splash is one of the most fun and rewarding events that DG has throughout the year. With playful competition, a nice workout, and donating to help a great philanthropy, what else could be better?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
