Everyone, no matter if you have seen "Grey's Anatomy" or not, has come to know the phrase "You are my person," a simple phrase exchanged between Meredith and Cristina multiple times, as they try their hardest to survive. And everyone has a person, someone who will show up in the middle of the night because you need them. And if we are lucky enough, we have more than one person, who will literally drop anything to be there when we need them and we would happily return the favor. Sometimes your people are your siblings, your first friend from grade school, a teammate, a roommate, or a sorority sister, but no matter who these people are, it is about time they were thanked.
To My People,
First, you know who you are. If you did not, then I am not doing this whole being "your person" thing well enough. Second, you are all perfection. Yes, I admit, all of us have been dealt a different hand of cards that makes our lives interesting, but you are all perfect. Some of you came into my life even before I knew what being someone's person meant. Some of you came into my life when I needed you the most, and some of you I forced myself upon, but it does not matter how we got here. All that matters is that we are here. You are a part of my life and losing any of you would be harder than any break up and more emotionally taxing than anything I can think of.
It is not just that all of you know entirely too much about me, or that you have an entire album dedicated to screenshots of snapchats that would make me a social pariah. It is the fact that you are family. I do not know when it happened or how it happened, but one day I woke up and you were there. One day, I woke up and realized that it did not matter what I did, said, or looked like; you were going to be there because somehow, in my craziness, I convinced you I was worth having around. I do not know what I did but I am thankful I did it, because having a "person" is the best feeling in the world. I know if I need someone to come pick me up at two in the morning you will be there. You might yell at me for waking you up, but you will be there. I know if I need to not be alone, I can just wonder into your room and get into bed with you and it will not seem weird at all. I know that even if you cannot be with me, I can call you and you will be there for me, no matter how many hours it takes on the phone.
So, to my people (you know who you are), you know when you came into my life, and now you know that I will be forever grateful for you in my life.
Thank you for being my people and please never stop.
