There was a point in my life when I was totally against ‘Going Greek’ in college. I was that girl who said, “You will never see the day that I join a sorority.” Guess what: I joined a sorority my second semester of freshman year in college. Before I joined, I honestly only knew the stereotypical side of Greek Life. Now, being someone who was never really interested in partying, I was never really interested in joining a sorority until one of my best friends convinced me to meet the girls in the sorority she rushed in the fall.
Now, I know that there are many stories of people who have said something along the lines of what I said, but when I said I would never join a sorority, I really did not know much about Greek Life. I still am learning the ropes of being involved with Greek Life, but I enjoy it. Every day I spend with these girls is an adventure. I love seeing all the different goals they are achieving.
Yes, there are stereotypical fraternities and sororities that party, but there are also ones that enjoy movie nights with their brothers or sisters. Greek Life is not the negative stereotypes--it is so much more. We raise money for philanthropy, support other chapters, and act as cheerleaders for our members as well as the members of other chapters.
Since becoming a member of my sorority, I have met so many amazing people who I know I would never have met if I had not accepted my bid. Accepting that bid was honestly the best decision I have made in college so far, and I know I will never regret it. I love everyone I have come into contact with because of Greek Life.
“Wow, you’re paying for your friends!” is something that is commonly heard or said when the mention of Greek Life is brought up. If I did not have friends, I never would have thought about joining a sorority in the first place. The people I have had the privilege of meeting have been some of the most genuine people I have ever met. They are willing to put their problems aside to help me with anything I need. I am not paying them to be my friends. I am paying to be involved in an organization that does a lot for charity.
People also think that people involved with Greek Life are uneducated, but we all have to maintain a certain GPA in order to remain an active member in our chapter. People in Greek Life, on average, have a higher GPA than those who are not involved. I have met some of the smartest people through Greek Life.
I am thankful that I have had the honor of receiving a bid from my chapter. I have become more outgoing and a better person. Like I said before, they are cheerleaders. They encourage everyone to do his or her best. Everyone has a different stance on Greek Life, but before you try to make someone feel bad about rushing, please know that there is so much more to Greek Life than what meets the eye.
