An Open Letter To The Open Letter

Dear Open Letter,

It has been too long. Over winter break I felt an empty cavity in my heart that you usually fulfill. My Facebook feed was filled with ever-so-boring posts and shares including, but not limited to; cooking videos, political news, and spring 2016 recruitment videos. These posts were a mere distraction from the pain I felt no longer seeing my college age girlfriends share “An Open Letter to My Younger Sister”. I truly don’t know what I would do without “open” letters. Not being able to read open letters on the Odyssey all break reduced me to reading my hard copy of national geographic, and *gasp* articles about current world issues.

I wake up in the morning ready for the day just itching to read more open letters. When I moved back into my dorm I was elated with the possibility of my news feed being over flowed with “An Open Letter to My Big” and “An Open Letter to My Mom”. Sitting on my freshly made bed I open my laptop with hopes of finding an “open letter” that I truly connect to, but my news feed is nothing but a barren wasteland for family news, HuskyTHON fundraising pages and blurbs from Bernie speeches. So I go about my day hoping and praying that a new semester of classes will bring the “open letter” back into my world.

Thankfully, now the spring semester is back in full swing. Odyssey articles are being shared multiple times a day and the “open letter” is thriving! I have no fear! For I need not waste my time broadening my social and political horizons! My news feed is flourishing once again! “An Open Letter to My Hometown Bestie” has surfaced almost 12 times! When I go to the library with intentions of finishing a lab report, or writing a paper I just know that won’t happen because my newsfeed is complete with “An Open Letter to My Roomie” (which is clearly relevant to my life because everyone’s freshman roommate is their best friend). I feel an utter passion for life now that the “open letter” is being shared as fast as you can think, and ideas on current issues and world politics are completely buried into the depths of my newsfeed.

So thank you, “open letter” for taking over almost every aspect of my life. I truly appreciate how your content proliferates through the college community and every social media outlet that I use. Please continue to share your ever-growing library of important ideas and theories.
