An Open Letter To The One Who Loves Him Next

I wish you nothing but the best.

An Open Letter To The One Who Loves Him Next

To the one who loves him next,

You do not know me, but I am the name that you may hear in passing. I’m the ex-girlfriend, but it’s safe to say that I am happy for you. I still feel a little bit of pain inside when I see your photos together, even though he is happy and not in love with me anymore. I still remember what he said when he left me, and I was in so much pain and he wasn’t. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do or feel, knowing that he was doing fine with someone else, and I was broken into a billion little pieces. But I’ll be OK, though.

Let me just say, I don’t want you to waste your time trying so hard to love him like the way I did. I don’t want you to suffer. Just love him the way you want to, and it will still be enough. He will appreciate you and love you just the same. But there are a few things you need to know, first.

His music is his life. He won’t reply for hours and sometimes you won’t see him for days. You will take it personally. Don’t. He’s simply taking care of himself by doing what he loves to do, and he’ll tell you how much he missed you while he was away. And on that topic, he needs constant reassurance. Tell him you love him and mean it. If you can’t do that, leave. He deserves more than that.

There will be nights where he goes out and drinks a bit. I’m sure he’s a different drinker now than he was in high school, but don’t ever let him mix rum and milk. He’ll laugh and tell you that it’s a good idea, until he ends up spending his night puking. Make sure he doesn’t take it that far.

He values his appearance a lot. There are nights where he takes longer to get ready than you do. His hair is his best friend, and you’ll never see him out in public in sweat pants or anything other than skinny jeans.

He has a weakness for puppies. If there’s a day when he’s feeling down, a trip to the pet store is all you need. He’ll even press his face up against the glass, and he’ll be the happiest man alive.

Relationships aren’t about the money, but buy him things. Not pointless things, but things that will make him happy. He loves surprises. He’ll be a little upset that you spent money on him, but he’ll get over it, and he’ll glow like a kid on Christmas.

Losing him is a pain you will never shake. Your world will come crashing down on you and those pieces will never fit the same way they used to. Don’t let him go. Give him your all and he’ll return the favor. You will never have to ask the universe for anything ever again. He will love you with all he has. Please give him the same. I am begging you not to hurt him.

When you’re young, you don’t expect love to hurt as much as it does. You’ll probably try to destroy yourself. You’ll rip your hair out and scream until you lose your voice. You’ll cry yourself to sleep to the point where your eyes are so swollen that you can’t even open them the next morning. Love is supposed to be desire and passion and affection. No one ever told you that this was love, or that this is what love does to you. Love is supposed to be when someone finally comes and picks up your pieces after you’ve ripped yourself to shreds. You are that person for him. You are the one who will now make him feel at peace. He is a handful, and I’m sorry for all of the baggage I have left him with. I don’t have any doubts that you will be great for him, though. He does have good taste, after all.

With that, I wish you both nothing but the best, along with happiness and good health. He’s older now, and more mature, but I’m sure he’s still fantastic. And as the song goes, “I got the boy, and you got the man.”

Best wishes,

The past of your present

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
