Dear Old Disney Channel,
Or shall I more properly address this letter to, "Lizzie McGuire," "That's So Raven," "Even Stevens," "Brandy and Mr. Whiskers," "Kim Possible," :Dave the Barbarian," "Lilo and Stitch," "Hannah Montana," "Suite Life of Zack and Cody," "The Proud Family," and all our other old favorites. It's been a long time since we met in my living room, too long. My generation, the generation that all of you helped form, is in college now. And while exams, internships, and part time jobs take up so much of our time, we still look forward to the tiny time block between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. when we might stumble upon one of you while channel surfing.
The Disney Channel started having throwback nights, where two or three hours of Disney Channel programming would be dedicated to bringing us back to our childhood. When we see one of our favorite old shows on, it doesn't really matter that we know Lizzie will eventually get her training bra, that Kim will save the day, or that Raven's vision will come true; we watch it anyway. We owe a lot to our favorite old shows. One of the biggest days of my life was when "That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana" hit the airwaves. I could have died a completely satisfied person that day. T
here's also a lot we never got to say before Disney Channel changed and we were forced to part ways. But the one thing that sums it all up is thank you. Thank you for being our best friend ready and waiting at home for us after school. Thank you for making us laugh in the mornings before we could even get dressed for the day. Thank you for chasing away scary dreams late at night when we couldn't sleep. Thank you for validating our pre-teen problems with your way-too-dramatic-for-a-half-an-hour-but-oh-so-relatable story lines. Thank you for being reliable, and for always coming with a happy ending.
Dear Old Disney Channel, when we were starting to grow up, grow old, and your classic shows were fading away, I promise you we tried to hang on. I would sit down and wait for "Corey In The House" to get funny, and I would pray to baby Jesus that Zack and Cody actually got to do something that let them get off of that cruise ship. But the spin-offs just weren't the same, and one day we suddenly found ourselves meeting by chance during 3 a.m. channel surfing sessions.
Disney Channel Original Movies, lovingly known as DCOM's, help us grieve our awesome childhood programming, as "High School Musical" and "The Cheetah Girls" stream right through Netflix and into our 9-year-old hearts.
You truly made an impact on our lives, Old Disney Channel, as I sometimes hear a cell phone ring in my college class to the tune of "Call me beep me if you wanna reach me." And the upcoming DCOM marathon during memorial day is the biggest thing to happen to my generation since Bernie Sanders.
So really, Old Disney Channel, this is just a simple letter, saying thanks for always being there, and for making our childhoods great.
