- You don’t know me, and you never will. So, first let me tell you a little about myself. I’m, in fact, not the coldhearted b*tch that you may think I am. I’m actually a really sweet person who is crazy about Jesus, dreams big, is always joking around, drinks entirely too much coffee, and who loved him with all my heart. I was his first true love and he was mine. He probably doesn’t talk about me and you’ve only ever seen my face through the pictures that use to cover his profile. Now it’s your face that covers everything. You’re the background on his phone, the one he falls asleep next to, the one his nana and pop-pop talk about to their friends, and the one that holds his world together now. Even though all of the “girl code” rules say that I should, I don’t hate you and I never will.
There are so many things I could say to you about what our relationship was like. I could talk about how perfect it was and how we really loved one another, but the most important thing I should say is that no matter how amazing our relationship was, it is a part of the past. You and I are not in competition. You have won his heart and I am truly happy for you.
You have been given one of the greatest blessings any girl could ever wish to receive. Cherish it. He will make you laugh until your stomach hurts and make you so angry you will want to pull your hair out. He will show you off to the world and take you on the most romantic dates ever. He will become your best friend and love you beyond words. It is your responsibility now, as the current girlfriend, to do the same for him. Hold his hand when you’re walking around campus and laugh at all of his ugly snap chats. Appreciate his late night calls and his good morning text messages. Cook breakfast with his dad and go shopping with his mom. Send him encouraging messages after he loses a big game (because it WILL happen and he will be upset for a couple of hours) and always make an effort to talk to his grandparents during half-time. Never leave his corner and continually pray for his spiritual guidance.
They say that you never forget your first love and I know that to be very true. I would never date anyone that would expect or force me to forget him, so please don’t expect or force him to either. Our experiences make us who we are. Instead love him in every way I couldn’t, and don’t break his heart like I did. He will make it so easy for you to fall in love with him, but I promise you he will be ready to catch you whenever you do. My final word of advice, treasure every day that you are with him.
Sincerely,
The Girl Who Walked Away
