With finals week approaching, my freshman year of college is coming to a close. It’s a miracle I survived, but I couldn’t have done it without the amazing people I surround myself with. It’s insanely hard to make friends in a largely populated, urban, commuter college in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
For the first month I was incredibly lonely, and in this sense, I’m thankful for social media for connecting me with my college family. We’re completely different from each other in several ways but we manage to accept each other's quirks. Honestly, going into college I wasn’t expecting to meet such genuine and easygoing people like you. I guess this is my thank you letter, for all the memories we’ll cherish together and of course for keeping me sane.
Dear friends,
I could go on and on thanking you for such a great year. To think that in such a short amount of time, we have become inseparable. We have created our own “traditions” or routines like celebrating Friyays, fro-yo Mondays, meeting up every morning on the bridge, walking to 59th Street, weekly shopping trips to LUSH, running errands together and eating lunch or dinner at the one and only Hale & Hearty. The memories we have together will never be forgotten and I know there will be much more.
We have our ups and down, but mostly ups. The biggest down was when one of you transferred schools. Not only did you transfer out but you left New York; it was hard on all of us. Considering how close you and I got in the beginning of the fall semester, it was definitely hard to say goodbye. They say that the best relationships are made during the most awkward moments. As strangers, we went underwear shopping at Victoria's Secret, we stopped off at the supermarket and you opened your apartment up to me. From that day on you would pick me up from my classes, we would waste away time at your apartment, and we would become the dynamic duo on Halloween weekend.
We may have lost a group member but the strong bond we had in the fall hasn't been lost. Whether we have a Skype session or send over 1,000 messages in our group chat, we still manage to catch up with each other. We’re at different stages in our lives and we’re all doing something new and exciting each day. And that’s what I love about you guys. Not one of us shares the same major nor do we have the same interests. But when one of us is off at a psychology convection, we still support each other and the next day we’ll be waiting to hear about the event.
You guys are truly the most talented people I know. It’s exciting to watch you guys work toward your education and better yourself. If there’s anytime we’re drowning in school work and just can’t handle the pressure, one of us is always there to pick each other up and reassure ourselves that this is all worth it. Sometimes I question how lucky I got to meet you guys. You guys are willing to stay up till 1:00 a.m. FaceTiming just to write our papers together. And if you ask me, relinquishing sleep for the sake of your friends is definitely a sign of a true friendship.
Thanks for a year filled with more time spent eating junk food and staying up late just to finish homework. I’m forever grateful for meeting such an amazing group of people like you. No matter how far away we live or how different we are, nothing can break this bond. We can only sit back and watch where the next three years will take us. Cheers to spending the rest of our lives together.
Sincerely,
Kat
