An Open Letter To The Friend I'm Leaving Behind

It's just temporary, I promise.

An Open Letter To The Friend I'm Leaving Behind

Dear Friend,

The moment we’ve feared for years is arriving. I knew the second I became best friends with an underclassman, that one day we’d have to part ways. That dreadful deadline is now a measly 10 days away. This is going to be one of the hardest, yet exciting, goodbyes of my life. Nevertheless, I do believe one day we will be reunited. Whether you decide to attend the same college as me, or 5 years from now when we’re living in a tiny apartment, eating roman noodles, trying to pay off those awful student loans we’ve accumulated. When our final summer of being reckless teenagers eventually comes to an end, I’m seeing this less of a goodbye, and more of a “see you later.”

I know you’re scared. You don’t want to spend your senior year without your best friend. I was fortunate enough to have mine by my side, which I will be forever grateful for. Between college applications, sports, and deciding which dress to wear for prom, your senior year will fly by. I’m excited for hilarious texts reminiscing old times or phone calls updating me on your life. Even though you’re afraid I will forget about you, I can promise; I still want to be a part of your life.

I want you to know, I’m just as scared as you are. I’ve graduated and am heading to an unfamiliar place, were who knows if anyone will accept my undeniable weirdness like you have. You’ve accepted the fact that I have a tendency to make jingle’s out of people’s names, and that no matter what song is playing on the radio, you will always hear my off-pitched voice singing along, even if I don't know the lyrics. I’m going to miss those late-night Domino runs because I have absolutely no food in my fridge, or the endless nights we’ve stayed up until 4 a.m. discussing our futures. Most importantly, I’m going to miss you.

Even if our plans of eventually struggling as poor college students together, doesn’t turn out as we anticipate, just remember: I still love you. We may not be cheering for the same collegiate team, or living in the same time zone, but you will always be a huge part of my life. A majority of my high school memories are composed of our crazy shenanigans, so unless I get hit by a bus and lose all my memory, you will never be forgotten. Your years of service as my best friend has earned you a place in my future bridal party, and a permanent place in my heart. I don’t ever plan to lose you in my life, mainly because you know entirely too much.

Forever and Always,

Your Best Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
