An Open Letter To The Class Of 2016

Seniors,

Graduation day is just around the corner. Only two more months of getting up to go to school for seven hours. Only two more months of seeing the people you grew up with in class, during lunch, and after school. Only two more months until the year you have spent preparing for the rest of your life comes to a close.

Whether you are packing up and moving 500 miles away or staying in the town you grew up in, your life is about to change. The past year has been consumed with turning in applications, finishing up AP classes, taking standardized tests, college visits, and figuring out your classes, career, and major. At this point, you are just waiting for the rest of your life to begin. Stop waiting.

Live for now. These memories are the ones that last a lifetime. Take a step back and relax. Spend time with your friends. Appreciate your teachers. Pet your cat.

Stay home for dinner. No matter how much you may think you won't miss those home-cooked meals, you will, I promise.

Enjoy your comfort. College will push you so far out of your comfort zone that you won't even remember what was once comfortable to you. Enjoy the things you have time to do now (aka binge watching "Grey's Anatomy").

Hug your mom. You will miss all of the things that incredible lady did to help you grow. Plus, she raised you, and it was not easy. Hug her.

Let go of grudges. You may not realize it now, but these next few months will either make or break a friendship. If you go to college while on a bad note with someone, there may not be time to turn it around. The period of adjusting to your new life as a college freshman is stressful enough without a pending fight to worry about. And who are you going to tell all those crazy first week stories to if you and your bestie aren't on speaking terms?

Take a look in the mirror. Take a step back and look at yourself, because a year from now, you will not be who you are today. College changes you. You grow up and you're the same, but somehow completely different from who you once were.

Don't stress. There is no point in spending your time worrying about the future. Enjoy your last high school memories and own senior year!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
