Think back to when you were packing to leave for college. Whether you were a freshman and it was your first time leaving, or a senior who was used to the routine. The hardest part, aside from leaving your family, was the hugs and “see you soon's” you left your best friends with. Nobody would ever be able to understand you like your friends back home, and leaving them was the worst.
But sometimes, you get lucky.Sometimes your friends end up selecting the same school as you, and it’s one less tearful goodbye. Instead, you get to venture off into a new world together, making new memories together. To the best friend that was part of my college pack list, I’m so lucky you’re here.
This doesn’t mean we spend every waking minute together. We may not be roommates, and chances are our majors aren’t the same either. You have your own activities, plans, and even friends, and so do I. But that doesn’t mean we never see each other on campus. We still plan things together and make sure we set aside time to catch up. But one thing that never changes, is how close you will always be to me.
To the best friend who came with me, I’m so excited we’re venturing on this new crazy experience together. Whether we do everything together or not, nothing will change the bond we had back home. We may be different majors and never have one class together. Activities will get in the way, and sometimes it will be hard to get together.
But we find time to meet up, because we know how important it is to both of us. Whether it’s every Thursday getting dinner together in the cafeteria, or every Monday grabbing breakfast for twenty minutes between class or activities, it’s something we look forward to. And when we do, it feels amazing to be together and compare what happened that day. We may only spend a few minutes together when we can, or we may be together all day. But having you on the same campus is like having a small piece of home with me while I’m away. There’s someone I can compare stories of the past with, because chances are you were right by my side when they all happened. And there’s someone to laugh at the jokes I make that only make sense to people at home, so I don’t feel totally weird when I get all the strange looks from new friends who don’t understand.
The best part of it all is when it’s finally time to go home, and we get to see our other friends we had to part with, we’re still together. While we get to learn about all the adventures they set out and had on their own, we get to share the stories of our adventures with them, together and separately.
So thank you, whether it was planned or just pure luck, for coming into this crazy new world with me. Thank you for dealing with my crazy schedule that makes it hard to meet up, and I promise to deal with yours. But most importantly, thank you for always standing by side whether on this new campus or right there at home.
