Dear Teenage Self,
It's been a while since my early teen years. So much has changed since then. It’s crazy what can change in a matter of time. Right now, you probably think you know it all and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but... you don’t know it all. Do you know how to live on your own? Do your laundry? Cook for yourself? Make payments? Support yourself financially? Nah, didn’t think so. But no worries, you're going to learn so much within the next few years. Therefore, I highly suggest you saddle up. Being a little bit older now, I'd like to give you a heads up on some things.
First thing's first, it's important to appreciate your parents. They do so much for you, more than you'll ever know. It's hard for them to watch their kids grow up. If you go away to school, it's hard for them to watch you leave. Their sacrifices are the reason why you're where you are today, so be grateful. If you’re away, text them or call them. Tell them you miss their cooking. Tell them when you’re coming home and how excited you are. But regardless if you’re still living at home or not, appreciate them.
Second, the amount of likes you have on a picture doesn’t matter. Nor does it define who you are as a person. Nor will it land you a job after college. Social media blows up more every year and that ain’t changing anytime soon. As you grow up, you slowly start to find yourself. However, don’t search for yourself in the sea of all those “likes,” because you won’t find anything. The amount of Facebook friends you have, Instagram followers, Snapchat friends, they’re all are just numbers. You’re not a number, you’re you. Don't let social media consume you.
Third, relationships will change. People who you thought would be your friends forever, won’t be. The older you get, the closer you are to finding your peeps fo’ life. And when you do find them, never let them go. If they make you laugh, keep ‘em. If you can trust them, keep ‘em. If they surprise you with ice cream when you're sick, you better keep them. Relationships with the right people can bring you genuine happiness and love to your life; you need that. Trust me.
Last but never least, take care of yourself and don’t rush to grow up. As you age, you’ll notice your body may not be how it used to be. Growing up is fun and all but as the real world slowly approaches, the more you just want to hide under the covers. In all seriousness, it’s fun. College is fun. Being older is great. You learn and experience a lot. You’ll meet people. You grow and change as a person. Just remember to keep your head up and you’ll be just fine.
Love always,
Your Older Self
