An Open Letter To My Sister

An Open Letter To My Sister
Tyree Reed

Dear Sister,

Life has had a strange way of working out for us and a majority of it has been beyond our control. In the grand scheme of things, fate brought us together and our paths forever intertwined. Never could we imagine the lives we would endure but I am glad to have had you by my side.

Since the day I can remember, it was the two of us inseparable. Us against the world, because the world would never be able to understand our experiences. I remember strangers thinking we were twins because Mom would find it entertaining to dress us alike even though we are two years apart. We did everything together. School was always fun especially when we had the same teachers. “Are you related to Tyree Reed?” as they secretly hoped you were not due to my reputation. But you were. They soon came to discover that we shared the same last name but not personalities.

We know exactly what buttons to push to drive each other up a wall. My favorite was to bust in your door as obnoxious as I could singing and dancing then watch you yell “GET OUT OF MY ROOM!” Priceless. Or the little things you would do and say that would just drive me up the wall. Like not doing what I told you to do. Or just taking my things without asking.

We have imaginations like no other, so our childhood adventures were nothing short than epic. Somehow each adventure leads to me being injured. Whether we were trying to play Bee-ball and whack bumblebees with sticks, which ended in me running away screaming and crying because I got stung. Or that one time when we were trying to play submarine with the picnic table umbrella pole that ended in me gushing blood everywhere with two fewer teeth. Let us not forget the many family vacations too! Honestly, there have been so many memories that it is hard to think of them all.

Though we have had many good memories we have also had our fair share of bad memories. Just know that everything that we have been through and will go through is to help strengthen us and grow as individuals. Imagine each experience in life is like a level in a game or chapter in a book and we must complete it in order to move forward. Live each experience in each moment. Do not take the small things for granted. Do not regret anything in life.

It is an unwritten rule that only siblings can mess with each other and anyone else who does will have hell to pay. Like I always say, " I pity the fool who tries to mess with you because they will have to answer to me." And we both know that I am a little crazy! Haha. No matter what I have your back! 110%.

There is not a day that goes by that I do not worry about you, but I know you will be alright, that is just the big brother side of me peeping through. I thank God every day for not only sending me a sister but a best friend. Remember to love yourself for who you are! No matter how much we try, we can not change who we are. Embrace it!

As we continue to grow up in this world, remember to spread love, be thankful, stay humble, show compassion, think positive, help others and never stop dreaming. You can do anything you set your mind to! Change your thoughts, you change your world. We are in control of our own destinies.

I love you to infinity and beyond!

Much Love,

Your Big Brother

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
