An Open Letter To Safe Rides

Not all heroes wear capes.

An Open Letter To Safe Rides

Dear pledge,

You may think that missing out on the party and driving multiple cars full of sorority girls is the worst thing that could have happened to you, but you could not be more wrong. You get so much out of that 10-minute drive across campus than most your brothers get from a three-hour party. This is the only time we can hear every word of a conversation, and although you may find our questioning of your life more of an interrogation, this is the time that we can actually learn who you are as a person and come to appreciate all you do for us. There’s a special bond that forms during that stressful drive.

You are our hero for those few moments. We spent weeks at the beginning of freshman year learning about the dangers of campus. It has been engraved in our minds to never walk home alone; however, sometimes you just have to. But finally, those “sometimes” have depleted to “almost never” because you’re just a phone call away. More importantly, you help us avoid any possible trouble with the law, which is more than we could ever ask for in a person we just met. But you do so anyway without a single complaint.

Not only do you make sure we make it safely back to our dorms, you also save our bank accounts. Uber fares have reached almost a point of ridiculousness, but that’s not even a concern of ours anymore. We have you to get us home safely and, more importantly, for free. MSUFC couldn’t be more grateful for you helping keep money in our accounts, and GreekBill couldn’t send you enough gratitude in the world for helping us be able to pay it on time.

Lastly, you continue to keep us pretty. Since we live in Michigan, there’s no guessing what the weather will be like, which would usually make getting ready even more difficult, but once more, that’s no longer a concern. We won’t have to worry about walking to your fraternity in the rain, causing our hair to be soaked and our makeup, which we spent an hour doing, to run down our face. Even more, we can confidently wear our heels out since we will not be punishing ourselves walking in them across campus. You help us to be able to go out feeling as though we can dress to the nines without a fear of our efforts being lost once we step outside.

So from the bottom of our hearts, we’d like to say thank you for all you do. We know those car rides of interrogation may not be your favorite, and that between the five of us in the car you’ll be asked where you’re from at least seven times, but thank you for taking it like a champ. You may think you’re missing out on a great night, but for that night you’re our favorite fraternity brother. Until next time.

Xoxox,

Your loyal passengers

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
