An Open Letter To Myself This Summer

An Open Letter To Myself This Summer
Julia Tremblay

You’re officially done with the school year and moving on to the hot, sunny, and carefree few months planned ahead. You have a lot to look forward to and I’m just reminding you of a few things.

Remember to take this vacation day-by-day because before you know it, you’ll be trudging through the snow while close to being blown away in wind tunnels. We’re all getting older now, and whether you have an internship or jobs to attend to over the summer, the sun isn’t going anywhere. We have a few months to enjoy it, so we have to take advantage of it. Do I hear beach trips? Don’t forget to have a handful of days waking up at 8am to drive to the nearest shore and spend the entire day there to see the sunset! It may be difficult waking up, but it’s all worth it in the end because what’s better than soaking up the sun and catching some sick waves with your best friends? The most important thing is to stop being foolish and put on at least little sunscreen so you aren’t red and peeling the rest of the week.

Catch up with your friends because distance has nothing on you and your BFFS during the school year, and it’s time to reunite. Go day tripping and spend endless days and nights at summer concerts. We all know we love stuffing our faces with hotdogs while tailgating at our favorite country concert. Maybe that's just my friends and I, but that's okay.

Take advantage of summer nights because there’s nothing else like them. What’s better than sitting around a fire at midnight, laying back and looking at the stars, and hearing nothing but the shouting and laughter of your best friends? Go throw on some ripped jean shorts, flip flops, and your closest quarter zip sweatshirt because it’s that time of year again. We all know that being outside and having it be a comfortable chilly temperature, but warm enough to still jump in the pool at 11:00pm if you want, is the best kind of weather.

When summer hits, it’s back to the typical all-nighters of Netflix and waking up at (or past) noon. Appreciate these days more than anything because you’ll miss them when you’re waking up for your 9:00am classes next semester. The ultimate question is, what series are we going to start? What show are we going to religiously watch for the next few weeks until we are on to the next one?

Attempt to wake up early and enjoy the sunrise and take a run down the prettiest street in your neighborhood. Get up and at it before the heat hits you. Yes, it may be difficult leaving your fuzzy blankets and dog in bed, but getting back from a successful jog is a great way to start your day, and hey, you can just go back to bed after if you want.

Please go grocery shopping with your parents so you aren’t stuck in a house with food that is not to your liking or else you’ll continue to blow your paychecks on overly priced smoothies and burgers. Instead of buying food, save up your paycheck and buy a nice camera because you and your friends are basically twenty. Time flies, so capture every moment!

Just remember to live in every moment; it’s not about what you are doing, it’s about who's with you for these next few months off. Go visit your friends from college, go some place you have never been, set new goals, and be adventurous. It’s never too late to discover new things about yourself. Immerse yourself in your love for summer and be more than “content” with life because these next couple of months have been a long time coming and they will definitely treat you well. Go overdose in s’mores, sun, and smiles.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
