An Open Letter To My Brother

Dude, I don't know what I would do without you.

To my dude,

We’ve come a long way since we first met. When you were just a few months old, I used to push your baby swing so hard that you would practically fall out. Then, when we were in our “sibling rivalry” stage, I would pinch your cheeks and pull your hair because “Mom was mine first."

I’m sorry about all of that. That wasn’t cool of me. But, look where we are now. You’re my best friend and the person I tell everything to. So I’m writing you this letter because I don’t tell you nearly enough how much you mean to me.

Thank you for making me laugh. Whenever I’m stressed out or upset, you know how to make me feel better. Your sarcastic jokes and goofy voices are things that I pretend to hate, but secretly can’t live without. Honestly, if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t know how to have a sense of humor. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but thank you for making fun of me relentlessly. You, of all people, know that I can get too serious sometimes and need to lighten up.

Thank you for always having my back. You’ve shown me that I don’t need to surround myself with people who don’t appreciate everything I have to offer. No matter what the situation, you’re always on my side and ready to defend me. Even though I’m the older one, I know that you will always step up and protect me.

Thank you for giving me advice when I need it. You’ve never been the person to give me a long speech telling me what to do, but you have this ability to say one or two sentences that provide me with all the clarity in the world. You’re wise beyond your years and I know I can always count on you to impart some brutally honest wisdom.

Thank you for being the coolest, funniest, most hard-working kid I know. I don’t know what I would do in this life without you and I pray every night that I’ll never have to find out.

Love,

Your sappy big sis

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
