An Open Letter To My Work Family
Rebecca Agnew

You fellow food service aficionados make me the happiest girl alive. Can you believe It is a weird concept for some people that I have a "work family"? That is what we are though. You guys are my family. You know my secrets, you support me, you care about me, and sometimes we annoy each other, but we end up forgetting about it and making up the next shift. You make the long night shifts, minimum wage, and the occasional not-so-nice customer bearable with your funny jokes, your warm smiles, and your bright personalities. I want you all to know from the bottom of my heart that I appreciate that feeling of closeness we all share. Work isn't always fun or easy, but it's never boring, that's for sure!

I appreciate the inside jokes we have. We always laugh and make the best out of a situation, and that has really helped me with my anxiety and depression. It has helped me not take things so seriously to the point where I have a mental breakdown. It is so uplifting to work with people who make you smile and teach you how to be positive even when you don't necessarily feel good about yourself.

I appreciate the concern we have for each other. Never once did I ever feel singled out or ignored. I know a lot of places there are cliques and hierarchies, but not here. You guys go out of your way to make sure everyone is included. It warms my heart because I know that we aren't just coworkers, we are friends.

You guys listen to me and you genuinely care about my well-being and what is going on in my life. You know my family, you always encourage me to follow my dreams, and when something good happens in my life, you are the first to congratulate me. On top of all of that, you even listen to me complain about literally everything. Kudos to you to that, because I complain A LOT.

I appreciate the opportunity to work with some of the most hardworking and determined people I have ever met. It makes me sad and angry for you because it is the consensus that people who work in the service industry are considered to be too unintelligent and lazy for 'real' jobs, because that is the farthest thing from true. You all take pride in your job and the work that you do, because you know its important for everyone that you do your job well. I have learned so much from your tireless work ethic, and I consider it a privilege to work alongside of you.

And finally, I appreciate the little things. I appreciate all of the good mornings, all of the laughs, all of times you've helped me with this task and that, all of the rants you've listen to, everything. You can't fathom how much you mean to me, and I promise you that you will always be my closet confidantes and friends, even if we don't work together forever. You have a special place in my life, and especially in my heart. Thank you, for everything.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
