An Open Letter to my Long Distance Friends

If age is just a number, so are the miles between us.

An Open Letter to my Long Distance Friends
Luke Jirik

To my friends across the country:

As I reflect on the holidays and the fact my college career is coming to a close after next semester, I can't help but think of how you're all doing - how your undergrad experience has been, your hectic grad school life, your work life, etc. - and how I hope we can find the time to catch up again soon. I constantly think about how special it is to me that we've been able to stay friends for so long, even if we can't always find the time to keep in touch. The truth is, despite how busy I've been pursuing my passions in the fields of writing and editing, I still think about how you're all doing (sometimes daily).

Kentucky and Georgia are both far from my home state, and you're even farther away from me when I'm at UND - but being friends with you all makes up for every mile in between us. I hate cliches and platitudes, but in some ways absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Social media, texting, phone calls, and Skyping all help alleviate the large gaps that seem like eons in between seeing all of you, but I hope to be able to see you more after graduation (and we really need to add to our pictures together). Just know that I hope you're all doing well and I hope to catch up with each and every one of you again soon.

Your friend from afar,

Luke

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
