To my lil' sis,
Congratulations on graduating high school! You made it through four years!
Now onto the next step in your life: college.
Was this something you dreamt of as a kid? Did you have this picture on your list of things to accomplish in the near future? Not every kid in this nation is lucky to have the opportunity to go to college. It is expensive (prepare yourself to be in debt) and depending on what college you choose, your grades have to match up to their standards. I know it sounds like I'm scaring you, but it's not intentional! College is just a huge reality and another step closer to the real world.
Your life is about to change and become insanely crazy! Depending on your class schedule, club meetings and other commitments, it might be. Don't worry, though. As long as you prioritize and stay organized, you will have time to relax and enjoy college life amongst its business.
It is a big step, developing independence without your parents hovering over your shoulder and watching what you do. Independence is a scary term for some and not so for others. If you are one of those that craves the separation, that's great! There is nothing wrong with being independent. If you are one of those who is scared, don't fret! There are people around you who probably feel the same way. Once you get into a regular routine, you will get used to being in charge of yourself.
When I say all of this, I mean it. I was in your shoes a year ago! (Isn't that scary?)
I had graduated high school and was excited (and nervous) to be going to college. It was not my top choice. My top choice was another college, but it all came down to scholarship money they offered me with the acceptance letter. In the end, I chose to go where I am now. When it came time for the last couple weeks of summer, I had to shop for clothes and other things (which I am betting you are in the process of doing). How was your stress level when you realized this was for real? I know for me, it was hard to see, but I accepted the challenge before me.
As you come down to the last two/ three weeks left of summer vacation, remember that you are not alone! I've been there and done that, so I know what you are going through. I want you to know that as your big sis, I am here to mentor you, guide you, help you with whatever you need, and of course, to bond when we hang out (which you will love, I promise). As you can tell by the picture you saw, that was my big sis my first year. She was there for me when I needed her and I hope to do the same for you!
I can't wait to meet you on campus and I hope we have a wonderful school year together!
Sincerely,
Your Big Sis
