To My High School Sweetheart,
I woke up each morning of my freshman year unaware of what the next four years would one day mean to me. I was nervous about class, and worried about the outfit I picked out. I didn’t know if my hair was "too middle school," or if I should apply extra make up to make myself look older. Although I thought I knew everything, I knew nothing.
High School contains the years of judgment. The harsh years of hatred and jealousy that fall upon us all without warning. It is like an epidemic of girls feeling self-conscious and insecure when standing next to anybody else, and it is absolutely draining. The days I felt low, were the days you always seemed to save me from worry. Through all of the insecurities that wept over me, you stole them before they ever settled in. You made me feel beautiful regardless if I woke up late and forgot to put makeup on. You made me feel special even when I missed an open net in my soccer game. You made me feel intelligent even when I failed a test. Anything that ever attempted to bring me down was erased from my mind by you. You might have felt as if those were the years you could have done more for me but you were too young to know any better, but you were assisting me in the process of learning to love myself.
In high school, a friendship is one the greatest things you can have, and you gave me that. No matter what happened with us, you always had my back. Regardless if we were arguing the night before, you hugged me that morning if someone hurt my feelings. You were the rock I needed during the battles I had with others and myself. At that age, I felt as if the entire world was against me at times; but day in and day out, you let me know you were always on my side. It didn’t matter if I told you to never talk to me again, because if I needed you… you were there. You saw me for exactly who I was and saw me grow from an awkward teen into a strong woman.
So, in this letter I want to thank you. Thank you for loving me for exactly who I am. Thank you for being a best friend to me for so many years of chaos. Thank you for dealing with all of the hormones that made me say and do things I never meant. Thank you for being blunt and telling me when I was wrong, because we all know high school makes girls feel invincible when they shouldn’t. Thank you for making me stronger, and allowing me to grow into exactly who I wanted to be. Regardless of all the changes and phases I went through, you loved me anyways. Thank you for knowing exactly where I com from, accepting every flaw you’ve ever witnessed (and yes, you have seen millions over the years), and reminding me of who I am at times when I forgot. I just want to thank you, for all you have done because I don’t think you ever truly knew. I hope I made as much of an impact on you, like you have for me. Thank You.
Sincerely,
Your High School Sweetie
