An Open Letter To My High School Classmates

Do you remember all of the times we complained about exams and tests even though really they weren’t even that bad? I miss when we would all join together and plead to just get a 3-point curve or extra credit questions because we’d die if we got less than an A… Now I’m praying I get a B-. Do you remember chemistry? That was rough.. Our English teachers had some of the best personalities and all of our history teachers were coaches. Math teachers were hit or miss (I got both sides of that). But one thing never changed in our classes… The loving classmates I took for granted.

In high school, we all got on each other’s nerves. We saw each other every day for the majority of the year and had a lot of classes together. Although most of us did not get along most of the time, we all cared for each other… and I miss that.

I miss seeing all of you in the cafeteria during lunch or in the parking lot before school. I miss your goofy laughs and snarky comments. I miss going to get food after school only to come back to watch the football games. And I miss giving our football team hell when they lost. I also miss my teachers. I think most of us had a favorite teacher that impacted our lives in more ways than just the classmates... I certainly had a few.

But to my classmates, I hope you’re doing well. I keep up with you guys. I know some of you went to college and got 4.0s and some went to college and didn’t share your GPA because you knew you could do better (that was me). I know some of you went to work right after graduating and some made families. I am happy for you, truly. We did not all go down the same path, but we didn’t go the same way in high school. So I didn’t expect any less from you guys honestly… I also miss the ones who did not make it to graduation with us. You are thought about often throughout our days.

I know that college and life is hard and it is really, really, REALLY time consuming. I get that… but I hope you know that even after we went separate ways that I am here for you still. It does not have to be Christmas or summer break for us to catch up… Text me. DM me. Get in contact with me somehow. I want to know about your semester or your growing family (Partly because I care and partly because I am nosy).

So thank you. Thank you for sticking by me during my annoying freshman years and being my side when I graduated. High school was tough, but my classmates were tougher.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
