An Open Letter To My Goddaughter

You were loved from the beginning, and you will be loved until the end.

To my Sophia,

I never knew it was possible to love someone you have never met or laid eyes on, until the day your mother asked me to be your godfather. I had a sudden rush of emotions at that very moment, but the one emotion that overpowered the rest was excitement. I knew I was ready to take on this responsibility. At that moment, being your god father was the only thing in the world that mattered to me. I may not have carried you for nine months, but I will spend the rest of my life loving you. You will never have a want or need in the world as long as I’m around. And when I’m no longer here, I will paint your face in the sky with the colors that spin around in my mind, just so others will know how much you brightened my life when you entered it.

I want you to understand, I will always be there for you, no matter what. Whether your mom, dad, or even grandma (I love you, Lina) are driving you insane, or you just want to get out of the house and hang out with your super cool godfather, I will always be only a phone call away. Your mother is probably going to kill me for how much I'm going to spoil you, but that's okay, we can both take her. I mean like really now, who can say no to a face like yours?

My only hopes for you are that you become a better version of all the positive influences you have in your life and you listen and learn from the mistakes we've made and will make. Understand that when you get in trouble, it's not us trying to be mean to you, it's us trying to stop you from making the wrong decisions. You have so many people that love you, and our love for you will only grow stronger with every passing day.I know you are too young to read and understand this right now, but I hope you will read this when you are older and understand how much I enjoy being able to be your godfather.

I know you are too young to read and understand this, but I hope one day when you are old enough and stumble upon this, you will see how much I loved you from the day I knew I was going to get to be a part of your life. I can't wait to see what the future holds for you.

Love,

Tio Dj

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
