An Open Letter To My First Favorite Band

Thank you for everything.

An Open Letter To My First Favorite Band
Abigail Grundfest

Fourteen-year-old me had absolutely no idea what she was getting herself into when she said yes to going to a cramped concert on a Friday night with her best friends to see you, but I'm really glad she went. From that day forward, you have had the biggest impact on my life and have been the soundtrack to every good and bad moment I’ve had for the past five years.

Thank you for the soundtrack to the best summer of my life. Nights of bonfires, late night car rides, amusement park trips, drives to and from concerts, beach trips and just laying by the pool would not have been the same without your words playing through my speakers the entire time.

Thank you for bringing me to my best friends. I have made my closest friends at the endless concerts that I would attend to see you. Thank you for giving me people to go to when nothing felt right or when I just needed people to have fun with. I would never have thought that I would be attending college with two girls that I met at one of your concerts, but the bond that we have made happened because of your music, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Thank you for making a crowded venue feel like home. Whether it be ten minutes away or ten hours, I knew that once the lights went down and the first chord was played on that guitar, the people in that room would feel like family and the venue would feel as familiar as my childhood home.

Thank you for not breaking up. The months of silence coming from your Twitter page almost signified the end of one of the best eras of my life. Thank you for putting your heart and soul into this fourth album so that none of us had to say goodbye to the good times.

Thank you for being my constant. As I grow up, many parts of my life have changed for better or for worse. The most comforting part of change was knowing that your music wasn’t going anywhere. I am so lucky to be able to still scream the lyrics to the songs that I loved when I was 15 just as loud at 19. You have taught me that jumping out of my comfort zone is the only way that I’ll grow up. The memories that I have made through your band are ones that I will cherish forever. Thank you for making music. Thank you for coming into my life at the perfect time. Most importantly, thank you for sticking by me all of these years without even knowing it. I will never be able to thank you enough for the impact that you have had, and continue to have on my life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
