An Open Letter To My Favorite Professors

The fountains of knowledge which we seek are no further than a walk away.

The first week of school has rendered us excited, hungry, and tired. Over the weekend, we simply relax and enjoy our time over a nice burrito platter. The next Monday only means we got to the beginning of another week of rinse, lather, repeat.

Those who are taking classes and working as a TA have it worse than other students. Imagine yourself committing 15 hours a week to running a single lab section of a course that, by itself, takes only three hours out of your week. Furthermore, you must also make sure you are attending your classes, arriving on time to important meetings, and trying to make progress in your career by going to career and academic resource fairs. Even if you are not a TA, chances are you have some commitment beyond academics. With nobody to hold us accountable, all this responsibility can sound dreadful. Who should we turn to for advice?

If you can relate to this so far, even if you only marginally sympathize, then I understand. Your professors would also understand; they have been in your shoes as well as those of others who have been through more rigorous academic careers. That being said, they would likely know how to overcome the issue you are having. Maybe you are having trouble understanding the content, or you might be frustrated at the amount of hours you decided to pile upon yourself. You might just be looking for someone to explain to you why the subject is useful. Your professor can help with that.

The following brief monologue describes how we should feel towards our educators:

Dear Professors,

I want to thank you for opening your doors to students who seek education, like myself. Without your expertise, I would not know what I do now. Without your guidance, I would not be where I am now. Thank you for writing letters of recommendation, for staying committed to your class, and for pushing to expand our boundaries when we reach them. Your generosity has inspired many - please do not forget this.

Sincerely,

Students

Remember, our professors are not our bosses, but rather, our leaders. They can't stop us from taking a day off, but they can inspire us to attend every class. Not all professors will be your favorite, but you should find one (or better, a few) that you can approach with questions.

It might also be helpful to note that they are more willing to work with you if you put in the effort to complete assignments. Regardless, find a dependable academic coach beyond the advising center, and you will see just how incorrect it is to say that your professor does not understand your situation.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
