An Open Letter To My Ex-Bestfriend

Dear Old Friend,

Once upon a time, we were best friends. It seems like lifetimes ago. Do you remember it? It’s all a blur to me now, now that I’m so used to you not being here. I’ve been contemplating writing to you because I’ll be honest: I miss you. It was a friendship that I wanted, but couldn’t make work.

For the longest time, you would be the one there for me when I was down or having problems. I could rely on you for anything, no matter what. I stood up for you even when you were wrong. There were so many smiles and laughter, but there were also endless amounts of frowns and tears. And even then, whatever the problem was, I helped you to the best of my ability. There were no secrets, and it was easy to open up to you because my level of trust was extremely high. For 14 years, you helped me in distress and you inspired me to walk on the right path, but you ended up taking the wrong path yourself.

We can examine the sincerity of a friend during our time of hardship and trouble. Only a sincere and faithful friend remains with us at those times. All others leave. You left. You left our friendship abandoned on a summer evening, for what? For a relationship? For a boy who your world now revolves around? You are not the only one in his, yet how can you not see that you deserve better? That you deserve to be loved and appreciated for all that you are worth?

It was us against the world. But we are not children anymore. There’s no more drama-less days or nightly sleepovers or adventures around town. There is now work and college and relationships that have brought new people into our lives, that now replace each other and the memories we once shared.

However, I do want to thank you for being my partner in crime and my other half for over a decade. I would also like to thank you for showing me the true meaning behind friendship because I have now found a brand new best friend, but no matter what, she will never compare to the friendship we had.

On Thanksgiving, when my grandmother asked me how you were, I would have loved to tell her about all of our recent adventures, but there were none. I would have loved to tell her how you were doing, but I don’t even know. I couldn’t help but break down because you were once my second family, and when our friendship dwindled down many months ago, I realized that this loss would be a tough one. It still is.

I want all of my secrets back. I want all of the tears I poured out back. I want my thoughts and my ability to trust back. I really just want my best friend back.

Sincerely,

Me

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
