An Open Letter To My Discipleship Group
Katie Ramsey

To My Discipleship Group,

I didn’t know what I was getting myself into. When I first heard about D-groups I thought it was yet another Christian thing to do, and in a way felt obligated to be a part of one. I had no clue that you would become such a huge part of my life. Here’s to you for making me a better version of myself.

First and foremost, thank you to my D-group leader. You have welcomed all of us into your home and given us a safe atmosphere to get to know new people and wrestle with our relationships with God. You cared for us and took us under your wing, with no knowledge of what would come out of it. Thank you for taking a leap of faith and letting us be a part of your life. Our college experience will be forever changed thanks to you.

Thank you for being something I look forward to. While college life is crazy, I can always depend on Wednesday nights to be a safe haven. Whether it is an excuse to procrastinate on homework or if I truly just need some prayer, I have people I can lean on for support in the midst of my chaotic life. I cherish that we have all committed to these nights to just be in fellowship with one another. It has never once felt like a chore or obligation to come, it has been a privilege.

Thank you for being transparent. It is not easy to open up to others so to immediately share our life stories with one another was terrifying for me. But because of our willingness to open up to each other we understood each other’s background and what made us who we are. While it was hard to shed our masks that we had created for college, it only made us stronger. Thank you for trusting us with your thoughts and feelings.

Thank you for challenging me in my faith. I thought that I was a “good Christian”- whatever that means. I thought that I had good insight on what God wanted for my life and had a clear vision on biblical topics. But God gave me this group to give me more insights than just my own and I am forever grateful for that. Thank you for making me see past my ignorant views and opening my eyes to better truths.

Thank you for new friendships. Most of us would have never crossed paths if it weren’t for this group. I am so thankful that I have six new friends that I can depend on and pour into each other’s lives. Thank you for laughing at my bad jokes and always giving me someone to say hi to on campus. I am so grateful to have met each and every one of you.

My freshman year of college would not have been the same without you very special six people. While I am sure that I would have been fine, I definitely would have been missing out if I didn’t take that leap of faith. Thank you for being a part of my life.

Love Y’all,

Your Fellow D-Grouper

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
